    Chief Purpose of This Position:

    The Department of Radiation Oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking an experienced medical physicist with strong management skills to serve as Chief of the Division of Medical Physics in a dynamic clinical and research-oriented department.

    The incoming leader will be responsible for heading all VCU Radiation Oncology Physics services, including those at satellite facilities, and for ensuring quality and safety in the delivery of radiation therapy to patients.


    Position Responsibilities:

    The Chief of the Division of Medical Physics will be responsible for leading all VCU Radiation Oncology Physics services, including those at satellite facilities, and for ensuring quality and safety in the delivery of radiation therapy to patients.

    As Division Chief, the individual in this role will certify that all required quality assurance, inspections, verifications, and calibrations are performed and will maintain compliance with radiation regulations, including federal, state, NRC, and healthcare facilities accreditation programs.


    Additionally, the Chief of the Division of Medical Physics will provide leadership and supervision to members of the Physics and Dosimetry groups as well as ensure provision of Physics support for VCU/Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center clinical trial activities.

    Further, they will be expected to guide future growth of the Radiation Oncology Physics program, supervise and mentor junior faculty and students, and play a leadership role in facility and technology development.


    The Division Chief will facilitate group leadership and engage in research activities leading to peer-reviewed publications and facilitation of extramural funding.

    They will also work closely with the Department Chair and Education Directors to foster and expand ongoing research and education collaborations within the Department and Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center.


    Duties Include:


    Teaching (5%): Actively participates in the instruction of students (undergraduate and graduate), residents (Medical Physics, Radiation Oncology, and others rotating through the Department), post-doctoral fellows, and mentoring of junior faculty through both lecture-based and hands-on learning activities.

    Research (15%): Works closely with the Department Chair to shape and promote the Physics research mission and activities.

    Clinical (40%): Assumes responsibility for clinical physics, safety/QA activities, treatment planning, equipment maintenance, equipment acquisition, and clinical physics training. Supervises and recruits Physics faculty, dosimetrists, engineers, and software/network professionals. Maintains highest standards of patient treatment, quality, safety, and effectiveness.

    Engages in modernization planning, delivery, and QA procedures emphasizing improved documentation, uniformity of practice, risk-based rationale, and better integration of process device QA.

    Administrative/Other (40%): Addresses administrative duties associated with management and leadership of the division.


    Required Qualifications:

    • PhD in Physics or a closely related discipline
    • Certification by the American Board of Radiology or the American Board of Medical Physics
    • At least 10 years of Medical Physics experience in a healthcare environment
    • Strong management skills
    • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member of VCU
    • Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publication and a commitment to clinical, translational, and/or basic research

    The clinical services we offer currently include: IGRT, IMRT, image-guided brachytherapy, total body irradiation, stereotactic radiosurgery, and stereotactic body radiotherapy.

    Across all of our sites, we manage six Linear Accelerators and four CT simulators, with our downtown location highlighting an MR simulator, PET CT simulator, and MR LINAC (ViewRay).


    Established in 1987, VCU's Department of Radiation Oncology provides a full range of clinical services at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center and its regional affiliated facilities.

    It is comprised of over 35 faculty in its three divisions, spanning five clinical locations and treating approximately 150 patients per day, with active, funded programs in clinical research, medical physics, and molecular radiobiology and targeted imaging.

    Our team is an integral component of VCU's Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of only two National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Virginia and one of 56 such centers nationwide.
