Fabio Herrera

My name is Fabio Herrera.  I was born and raised in Honduras where I got my education until the 12th grade. I had the oportunity to better my education by coming to the USA in 2017 where I got my undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology at Cedarville University. I further my career as a professional at Wright State University where I got a masters in anatomy. During this masters I have the opportunity to teach Anatomy and Physiology to Undergraduates as an adjunct faculty for 2 semesters.

During my second year of my master's, Wright State University offers the best three students from the anatomy masters jobs as adjunct professors for their undergraduate anatomy class. In this job, I was responsible for documenting attendance and completed assignments of the entire class. I was able to teach and impart lectures in which I showed them all the anatomical structures in both cadavers and pro-section. The classes ranged from 70-100 students. I was responsible for 2100-3100 level courses. Our professor in charge gave us a lot of freedom when it came to teaching styles. This is where my love for teaching started. I was able to make a connection with my students by motivating them and creating an environment of trust. Some of the techniques I was able to implement were group activities, interactive games, and peer review. I believe this allows me to capture their attention and make the content more accessible. At the end of the year, I got the best reward as a teacher, I got the highest scores on the student evaluations in both semesters I worked there.

I also had the opportunity to help as a TA at Boonshoft School of Medicine. This was a job offered by our anatomy program director as she is also a professor at the medical school. She is responsible for teaching Gross Anatomy in my master’s program, and she offers this job to the top two students of that class. This is a very fast-paced anatomy and embryology class in which the following topics are taught: Head and neck, digestive tract, and reproductive system. I was responsible for guiding 150 second-year medical students through the dissection of cadavers. I was also responsible for teaching small groups after class through specific parts of the coursework. It was a great opportunity for me to teach anatomy at a high and complex level.

To further my science education I decided to pursue a master's degree in the area of Anatomy and Physiology at Wright State University. It was a two-year program in which I was able to further my knowledge about the human body. I had the opportunity to use such skills and teach labs for a whole year to both pre-medical and pre-nursing students as well as a summer at Boonshoft School of Medicine. I was responsible for certain lectures as well as showing students structures in donors and pro-sections.

It was a program which pushed me to new limits but also taught me the importance of my own mental and physical health. This challenging opportunity brought a new appreciation for time outside school such as growing in my relationshionship with friends and enjoying sports such as soccer.
