Description
Provides pre-health advising for UCR students and alumni from all majors interested in pursuing a graduate/professional degree in the health professions.
In addition, this position assists with program development, such as creating workshop ideas and materials, speaker series, assessment and evaluation, recruitment activities as well as other related duties.
Assists with coordination of peer mentor program including selection, training and supervision of 16+ peer mentors. Compiles statistical data on students applying to health professions schools. Assists in planning long term goals to increase productivity of office. Represents the Health Professions Advising Center, Undergraduate Education and UCR at various events on campus and in the community. The full salary range for the Pre-Health Advisor is $54,200 - $93,200 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is $54,200 - $60,000.We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Provides advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for the department/school/college.
Determines barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues, and makes appropriate referrals for additional therapeutic counseling and/or assistance from other units.
Advises students interested in a full range of health professions, including, but not limited to allopathic (MD) and osteopathic (DO) medicine, dental (DDS and DMD), podiatric (DPM) medicine, veterinary medicine (DVM), pharmacy (Pharm.
D), public health (MPH) and health services research (PhD).Advises and counsels students on health professions course requirements, extracurricular preparation, admissions tests, letter of evaluation and application processes for health professions schools.
Maintains individual record of contacts and advising notes for each assigned student.Makes referrals to other campus units (e.g., CNAS, CHASS, BCOE, SOBA, SOE, SPP advising centers, Career Center, Academic Resource Center, Counseling Center) as appropriate.
Using a developmental advising model, works with students and alumni one-on-one to assist them in assessing their progress, set goals, and to encourage them to apply for summer programs, leadership opportunities, community service, research and other activities.
Determines needs of the students and the best ways to serve those needs. Writes letters of recommendation for students applying to summer programs, scholarships, internships and to health professions programs. Provides guidance and encouragement to students with less competitive but promising academic performance.Advises on special eligibility requirements such as Honors programs/fellowships/scholarships.
Assists in developing and conducting workshops to prepare students for health professions programs, including general information as well as topics on the admissions process, including personal statement writing/review, interviewing skills and conduct mock interviews.
Coordinates and schedules events with outside community members, writing personal statements, and other topics to help students prepare for professional school admission.
Assist the director of the advising center in evaluating program effectiveness by compiling statistical data and creating reports as requested (e.g., student usage patterns, data from centralized application services to determine number and characteristics of successful applicants to health professions, etc.).
Assist center staff in updating HPAC website, including marketing and promotion of workshops and advising services, ensuring all initiatives and programs are well reflected on the website.
Develop, organize and manage social media and other types of communications and marketing materials for HPAC. Assists in providing training presentations to campus departments.Oversees HPAC Student Ambassador Program. Oversight includes, but not limited to, recruitment, selection, and continuous training of 12-15 ambassadors annually.
As the lead advisor for the ambassador program, plans bi-weekly meetings to engage ambassadors in mentoring practices as well as seeks assistance with current/upcoming events for current/prospective students.
Advises on complex transfers from other institutions such as those in the midst of advanced degree completion and coursework in other programs.
Advises students on a wide range of course possibilities and/or ways to complete degree requirements that may not be clearly defined.
Other Duties as Assigned.Advises new and continuing instructors on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures.
Evaluates and advises students in petitions for exceptions to departmental/school/college and/or Graduate Division requirements.
Advises new and continuing instructors on student advising issues.
Identifies students with GPA or progress problems, advises students, and recommends appropriate courses of action by the department/school/college (e.g., academic probation, dismissal).Assists faculty on determining course scheduling needs for student progression to graduation.
Confirms that students have met requirements for degree completion when there are no clear precedents or articulations, such as interdisciplinary programs or when transfer work is involved.
Participates in planning academic curriculum in collaboration with chair/dean and faculty, and with other departments, to ensure student's progress through course sequences, avoid conflicts, and ensure compliance with organization-wide policies.
Advises, identifies, recruits, and assigns to courses graduate student instructors, Readers and Group Tutors within and outside of departments.Reviews doctoral dissertations and master's theses for conformity to standards set by graduate division, the UC Library, and dissertation publishing requirements, and advises students accordingly.
Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of multiple majors, colleges, and schools.Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
