    Syntiro, a mission-driven nonprofit organization headquartered in Augusta, Maine, seeks a

    attending to minute details and overseeing/managing an organization's long-term financial health.


    Syntiro, located in Augusta, works for equity in partnership with educators, state agencies, and community organizations seeking to acquire knowledge, embrace change, and increase effectiveness in education and employment.

    For almost 40 years, our Maine-based nonprofit has been respected for its commitment to providing creative and innovative professional development and results-based services addressing critical issues facing Maine and the nation.


    Syntiro is currently administering Maine's State GEAR UP program (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) in collaboration with the University of Maine at Farmington, which received funding from the U.S.

    Department of Education GU-ME RISE is designed to enhance and improve the rate at which students graduate high school and enroll in and complete postsecondary education.

    GU-ME RISE is framed upon four attributes ( R elevance,

    I nquiry,

    S upports and Equity for All, and

    E xpectations and Aspirations for Postsecondary Education) that have critical importance to addressing the needs of economically-disadvantaged, rural Maine communities.

    Key Responsibilities

    Syntiro is seeking an experienced finance professional to oversee all financial operations.

    The responsibilities of the Finance Director include:
    Budget development–for Syntiro, for grant proposals, for grant programs, and for special projects.


    Developing, implementing, and maintaining policies, procedures, and internal controls that ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of records and adhere to sound practices.

    Financial reporting and analysis, including monitoring actuals vs budget.

    Executing the bi-monthly payroll.

    Preparing all expenditures for approval by the President, and ensuring accurate and timely payment of all obligations.

    Maintaining the accounting system.

    Ensuring compliance with federal regulations for federal awards in conjunction with the sponsor.

    Preparing and submitting grant invoices to fiscal agents.

    Performing monthly bank account and program reconciliations.

    Updating cash-flow tracking daily.

    Creating, recording, and documenting journal entries.

    Managing all bank accounts and bank cards.


    Working with external auditors–coordinate the audit process, provide timely information during the audit process, and implement changes/improvements as a result of post-audit feedback.

    Collaborating with team members to develop new systems to support and track various grant and project requirements.

    Supervising the Finance Assistant position–monitor training and development, mentor, and conduct performance evaluations.

    Presenting financial reports monthly to the President for review.

    Presenting financial reports periodically to the Board.


    The Finance Director position is a full-time, grant-funded, hybrid position (3-5 days/week working in the Augusta office; up to 2 days/week working remotely) that reports to the Syntiro President.

    This position requires occasional travel that may include nights and weekends.

    Qualifications


    The ideal candidate has:
    a Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance, or a related field with 3-5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;

    proven experience with recording financial transactions, financial planning and budgeting, and financial reporting, preferably in a nonprofit environment;

    competency with programs and applications for financial management (Quickbooks Online, Excel) and document management (Acrobat Pro, Google [Docs, Sheets, Gmail, and file management] and scanning/printing);

    an excellent understanding of financial reports and statements and the ability to convey financial information to non-finance stakeholders;

    working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and standard accounting practices;

    working knowledge of the federal regulations that govern the administration of federal awards;

    self-motivation, self-direction, and initiative;

    integrity and discretion, and commitment to maintaining confidentiality;

    a thirst for continuous learning;

    enthusiasm for developing systems that make procedures more accurate, thorough, and efficient;

    strong interpersonal skills and eagerness to collaborate as a member of the team;

    excellent verbal and written communication skills;

    an eye that catches details that most people miss;

    the ability to juggle and prioritize multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment;

    superb analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills; and

    passion for our mission and work.

    A background check is required prior to hire.

    Compensation

    Competitive salary and benefits for the most qualified candidate.


    Hiring Range:
    $65,000-80,000
