    About DESC:

    DESC (Downtown Emergency Service Center) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals facing homelessness, substance use disorders, and mental illness in achieving optimal health and well-being through comprehensive services, treatment, and housing. Vision is to create a community where no individual is neglected, overlooked, or homeless.

    As a leading service provider in the region for multiply disabled adults who have experienced chronic homelessness, DESC assists nearly 2,000 individuals daily. The organization is renowned nationally and regionally for its innovative approaches to addressing homelessness.

    JOB DEFINITION:

    We are seeking a passionate Software Developer who recognizes the crucial role of technology in addressing social service challenges.

    DESC's web app and network infrastructure support approximately 1,000 users across 19 sites daily. The core application utilizes a legacy LAMP stack transitioning to a NestJS/Node API and VueJS front-end, all supported by a PostgreSQL database.

    While this role is remote, the candidate must be a resident of Washington State.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Support and enhance web-based software application systems.
    • Develop features, data structures, and maintain existing systems.
    • Adhere to best software engineering practices for stable, understandable, and maintainable code.
    • Collaborate with IS and agency staff on new features, debugging, and code enhancements.
    • Engage in discussions, planning, and decision-making within IS and other departments.
    • Perform other assigned duties.

    Requirements:

    • Experience maintaining web applications in a professional setting; Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; or equivalent experience.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to deliver high-quality work independently.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to convey technical information to non-technical audiences.
    • Team player with a commitment to cooperation and client respect.
    • Minimum of two years' programming experience, including server-side programming, front-end web development, version control, and SQL.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Prior experience with non-profit or social service organizations.
    • Cloud experience (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform).
    • Object-oriented programming and medical/health information experience.
    • Knowledge of Apache or other HTTP server technologies.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    The physical demands involve sitting, communication, lifting items up to 25 pounds, and operating computer systems. Visual acuity and ability to handle stress are also vital.
