MIYC Sailing Director Job Description
The season for the Sailing Director begins June 17, 2024 and ends August 16, 2024. There are evening and weekend events throughout the season that may require attendance by the Sailing Director. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Requirements:
US Sailing Level 1 Sailing Instructor certification and CT Safe Boating certificate.

First Aid and CPR certification preferred.

The Sailing Director Responsibilities are as follows:

  • To create and foster a warm and safe environment, while modeling and enforcing the rules of MIYC.
  • To teach the sailing instructors, adults, and juniors the importance of safety on the water. All instructors must have a VHF to maintain contact while on water, informing you if they are out of sight of MIYC while giving instruction.
  • To oversee the junior sailing class schedule, making sure that there is instructional coverage for regatta days when some instructors are off-site coaching.
  • To plan and execute a schedule of classes for adult sailing instruction in the fleet of three Ideal 18s,
  • To maintain the list of qualified Ideal 18 sailors, and assist other interested adult members in becoming qualified. Then to manage the calendar on the website for sign-ups that reserve Ideal 18s by qualified sailors.
  • To collaborate with other sailing instructors to develop and execute lesson plans that include dry-land and on-the-water drills and inclement weather activities.
  • To keep accurate records of attendance and any injuries that may occur during class time and regattas.
  • To oversee that the floating docks with 420s and Optis and all club-owned teaching boats are ship-shape and ready for students before and after lessons.
  • To maintain an organized teaching environment in the Sailing Room (aka JYC), ensuring that sails and blades are stored neatly, walkie-talkies are charged, and Ideal 18 Go-Bags are stocked and ready for use.
  • To alert the Sailing Program Chairs to any problem, safety issue, or staff-related issue should any arise.
  • To communicate any repairs and /or maintenance issues to members of the Waterfront Committee so they can be addressed.

Pay:
$ $30.00 per hour
