Preadmission Evaluation Unit

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:


  • Provides pre procedure screening, prepares the patient, family and significant other for his/her experience throughout the Perianesthesia Continuum for patients utilizing the Specialty Level I Trauma Operating Rooms, Outpatient Operating Rooms and Anesthesia Remote sites.
  • Patient Population: Adult and Pediatric, Inpatient and Outpatient.

RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • The Outpatient Service RN Manager is responsible for the daytoday operations at Baystate Health. The Manager collaborates with the professional nursing staff, physicians, and ancillary staff to care for patients with multiple and complex healthcare needs.
  • The Manager assumes accountability and responsibility for translating the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the hospital and the nursing service into effective action.

Responsibility is centralized within six major areas:
clinical practice, leadership, collaboration, professional development, management of the environment, and strategic planning. Incumbent demonstrates Baystate Health operating principles and behaviors. The incumbent is expected to adhere to system and department compliance policies and any applicable laws and regulations.

  • Integrates the service philosophy and values into all unit practices and programs. Ensures the development and practice of nursing in the outpatient service area. Ensures excellence in patient care through interactions with patients and families, nursing staff and other members of the health care team. Ensures the clinical competence of staff through direct interaction and observation, ongoing evaluation of patient outcomes, and feedback from other members of the health care team. Keeps current with the literature regarding changing practices, interventions, and research in patient care and health care delivery. Attends appropriate educational forums. Actively participates and supports servicebased performance improvement efforts.
  • The Manager creates an environment & provides leadership for the development of the Baystate Health vision to achieve high quality, effective, and efficient patient care. Challenges systems in order to accomplish patient, departmental, and institutional goals. Supports the ongoing development of staff through coaching, mentoring, and role modeling. Initiates and manages change, ensuring appropriate support and resources to staff. Seeks opportunities to build working alliances with other professional teams. Creates opportunities for multidisciplinary forums in order to solve problems and facilitate planning. Demonstrates skills to meet Baystate Health's Core Competencies in leadership. Seeks guidance for appropriate resources in achieving unit and departmental goals. Sets expectations for behavior and communication and holds individuals accountable, including followthrough of Corrective Actions.

  • The Manager collaborates with other members of the institution to ensure the delivery of services to meet patient care needs. The Manager is accountable for managing human, fiscal, and other resources needed to support outpatient service nursing practice and positive patient outcomes. Maintains open communication with departments that provide support services to the clinical area to ensure the appropriate level of service at all times. Develops and participates in creating systems that monitor operational activities. Follows issues through until resolution occurs. On an ongoing basis, monitors and critically analyzes resource utilization in the unit. Develops budget proposals based on the changing needs of the patient population and clinical programs.
