The University of North Alabama's Department of Engineering and Industrial Professions ) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level specializing in occupational health and safety and/or industrial hygiene.This position will have teaching responsibilities that involve instruction at both UNA's main campus located in Florence, AL, and at the Guizhou University-University of North Alabama International College of Engineering and Technology located in Guiyang, China.
This position will begin in Fall 2024. The successful applicant will be expected to teach at least two months per semester in China. Initial review of applications will begin on April 1, 2024, and continue until the position is filled.The Northern Alabama and Guiyang regions are home to a large economy of industrial and manufacturing operations.
Therefore, the successful candidate will have experience that is consistent with the ability to develop occupational safety and health curriculum in support of regional manufacturing needs.
This position will also continue to explore new curricular possibilities in occupational health and safety as the needs of the department and region evolve.
The standard teaching load for this position is 12 credit hours per semester, with all instruction being provided in English.
The OHS program at UNA's main campus is one of only four bachelor's-level, ABET-accredited industrial hygiene programs in the United States.
The program is designated as a Qualified Academic Program by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and supported by a NIOSH Training Project grant.
Teach program-related coursework in occupational health and safety related to (but not limited to) physical agents (noise, thermal stress, and radiation), industrial toxicology, regulatory compliance (OSHA and EPA regulations), occupational air sampling, and ventilation controls; Develop curricula related to (but not limited to) occupational safety and industrial hygiene; Advise and mentor students; Participate in scholarly activity; Provide service to the university, college, department, and profession; and support the department's current ABET-accreditation process.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff in written form, verbally, and inter-personally; Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff; Willingness and ability to teach and/or learn to teach a varied and evolving curriculum; and ability to plan and perform hands-on development of laboratory equipment and exercises.
PhD in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health Science, or a relevant science field is required; five plus years of industry experience in environmental health and safety is preferred; teaching experience at the college/university level is preferred; certifications relevant to environmental health and safety (CIH, CSP, CHMM) are preferred but not required; and demonstrated written and spoken fluency in English is required (fluency in Mandarin/Southwestern Mandarin is desired, but not required).Please be prepared to upload a cover letter and resume/CV at the time of application, as well as provide contact information for at least three professional references.
