- Conducts inspections on residential and commercial structures for compliance with applicable building, electrical, plumbing, HVAC roofing, insulation, and related codes and standards as allowed by appropriate licensure.
- Inspects adequacy of building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and roofing, and structural safety for conformity to code.
- Reviews blueprints and building construction plans and specifications for code compliance.
- Records failed inspections: issues citations and warnings; works with contractors and property owners to resolve conflicts, solve problems, and achieve compliance with all requirements; reports all issues of non-compliance to proper officials for prosecution; and maintains related documentation.
- Performs single-trade inspections in primary area(s) of expertise as assigned for both commercial and residential structures and investigates and resolves complaints against contractors and citizens regarding code and permit violations.
- Performs basic, routine administrative duties including written reports, interaction with contractors and the public, and communication through telephone and meetings.
- Provide exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication.
- Combined experience in the field of construction or plans review that meet the specifications required by Florida Administrative Code for Residential Inspector Certification.
- Building Inspector Certification requirements,as per Florida Administrative Code 61G19-6:
- Four (4) years combined experience in the field of construction, building code inspection or plans review corresponding of the certification category sought or
- Three (3) years combined postsecondary education in the field of construction, building experience with one (1) year experience working in construction, building code inspection or plans review or
- Three (3) years combined technical education in the field of construction experience with one (1) year experience working in construction, building code inspection or plans review.
- Must maintain a valid driver's license.
- Must possess and maintain Certification as a Building Inspector by the State of Florida Administrative Code and F.S.S.

- Knowledge of building construction techniques and methods and the ability to identify areas that deviate from approved construction drawings and areas not compliant with the applicable codes.
- Knowledge of mathematics, soil, design statics, strength of materials, mechanics, concrete, reinforced concrete, steel, and timber design.
- Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
- Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
- Skill in the use of office equipment such as a computer, multi-line telephone system, scanner, fax machine, and copier.
- Ability to recognize faulty construction or hazardous conditions.
- Ability to understand and interpret established building codes, and to enforce codes and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
- Ability to read and interpret building construction plans and specifications, including the ability to check construction plans for compliance with all applicable codes.
- Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in interpreting and enforcing department codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to provide internal/external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication.
- Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
- Ability to author reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

Performs technical work in inspecting building construction, alterations, and repairs to ensure compliance with Florida building codes. Work is done via technical examinations and the application of standard trade practices to inspection work.
Primarily responsible for conducting field inspections in one of the following areas:
plumbing, mechanical, structural, or electrical, depending on licensure.
