    Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Director of Student Services and the building principal


    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Current Ohio intervention specialist teaching certificate/license for gifted education

    JOB SUMMARY

    The gifted teacher will assist with the identification of gifted students; develop a strong gifted curriculum and implement a sound program of instruction for gifted students.

    The gifted teacher will share ideas for improving the education of gifted students with others; promote the growth and development of the gifted program; and will provide creative, enriching activities and projects for students enrolled in the program.

    The gifted teacher will communicate on a regular basis with building principals in the assigned district and with parents of the children enrolled.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

    • Assist in the identification process to determine students eligible for the gifted program
    • Prepare a Written Education Plan (WEP) for each student served
    • Provide instruction that is differentiated from the standard curriculum in depth, breadth, complexity, pace, and/or content above-grade level
    • Develop, plan and implement a creative and enriching program of instruction for each student according to their WEP that requires the maximum use of higher level thinking skills, problem solving techniques and creative thinking skills
    • Collaborate with other classroom teachers and gifted teachers in the development, evaluation, and revision of the gifted education program
    • Provide ongoing and regular communication with building principals, teachers, and parents regarding classroom activities and student progress
    • Work with other gifted teachers to implement in-services and recognition ceremonies as requested by the supervisor
    • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations
    • Enforce administrative policies and rules governing students

    ADDITIONAL DUTIES

    • Attend open houses and other parent meetings regarding gifted children as directed
    • Seek opportunities to improve skills and grow professionally; attend all required meetings and in-services
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

    • Knowledge of the Operating Standards for Identifying and Serving Students Who are Gifted
    • Knowledge of criteria for identifying gifted children
    • Knowledge of problem solving processes and creative thinking skills
    • Ability to effectively manage a classroom
    • Ability to differentiate instruction based on a student's readiness, knowledge and skill level, including using accelerated content, complexity, depth challenge, creativity and abstractness;
    • Ability to select, adapt, or create a variety of differentiated curricula that incorporate advanced, conceptually challenging, in-depth, distinctive and complex content
    * (Ability to provide an extension or replacement of the general education curricula, to modify the learning process through strategies such as curriculum compacting, and to select alternative assignments and projects based on individual student needs

    • Ability to understand the social and emotional needs of students who are gifted and to address the impact of those needs on student learning
    • Ability to recognize and respond to characteristics and needs of students from traditionally underrepresented populations who are gifted and create safe and culturally responsive learning environments
    • Ability to use data from a variety of sources to measure and monitor the growth of students who are gifted
    • Ability to select, use, and interpret technically sound formal and informal assessments for the purpose of academic decision making
    • Ability to participate in the development of the "Written Education Plan."
    • Ability to use technology as both a productivity tool and as a method of communication; Proficient in computer applications (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Docs)
    • Ability to work with teachers and students to demonstrate ways of creating a challenging and exciting atmosphere in the regular classroom
    • Ability to establish a rapport with classroom teachers
    • Ability to communicate effectively with teachers, principals, and UDL coach or gifted coordinator
    • Ability to model ethical principles and democratic ideals for students and the community

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

    • Stand for periods of time, move around the work site, move from one work site to another, sit at a desk
    • Stoop, kneel or crouch to assist students
    • Occasionally lift and/or move materials up to fifty pounds
    • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders by talking and listening
    • Operate a computer and other technology devices
    • Read and analyze data (close visual acuity)

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    • Noise level may escalate in group or event settings
    • May include exposure to disease and infections
    • Exposure to inclement weather when traveling from one work site to another
    • May be required to deal with students with behavioral risks
    • May require local travel
    • May also require attendance at meetings outside of regular work hours (e.g. early morning, after school)
    • Involves stress as a result of the responsibility to ensure that laws, regulations and procedural rules are followed, the responsibility of dealing with individual student concerns and maintaining student discipline, and the demands of maintaining effective communication with other staff members, students and parents

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment at the ESC of Lake Erie West
    • Complete a satisfactory background check
    • Possess a valid driver's license or have transportation
    • Review the ESC Staff Handbook as well as Board Policy to understand job expectations

    FLSA STATUS EXEMPT - Full Time/Part-Time


    CONTRACT

    • Contingent upon availability of funding;
    • Contract days determined by ESCLEW governing board;
    • Other terms and conditions of employment as per the ESCLEW governing board policies and procedures or negotiated agreement
    SALARYBased on salary schedule and/or commensurate with experience and education.
