- Contributes medical and population health expertise to GDSP multidisciplinary teams (nursing, health education, data analysis, contract monitoring) that provide oversight and clinical assistance to GDSP service programs.
- Coordinates and conducts health policy and program development activities such as interpretation of service program performance and population health data, evidence-based practice guidelines, research, external quality review, and use of these data sources to drive improvement in health outcomes.
- Uses highly skilled technical expertise to prepare timely responses to letters, bill analyses, controlled correspondence, and requests from the CDPH Director's Office and the Center for Family Health Deputy Director.
- Uses highly skilled medical expertise to review publications, manuscripts, abstracts, etc. prepared by GDSP staff that are highly complex, difficult, and sensitive.
- Serves as liaison to the Department of Health Care Services, public health agencies, and other relevant California intra- and extra-departmental medical professionals and program staff to assure appropriate coordination of policy development, implementation, and problem-solving.
- Develops and updates health and medical information relevant to GDSP.
- Uses highly skilled medical expertise to provide guidance to clinical personnel providing contracted services and data reporting for screening-related clinical activities.
- Coordinates the work of or consults with Division and Center medical professionals and other technical staff regarding medical policy and service program issues to assure consistency of policy development and implementation.
- Participates and serves as a member on various committees, subcommittees, and work groups to discuss issues of ongoing importance to the development of medical policy, or to resolution of problems specific to the operation of GDSP.
- Assists GDSP service programs with outreach efforts.
- Conducts routine literature reviews on critical issues for GDSP and maintains an accessible database of reference materials for preparation of critical communications.
- Maintains up-to-date professional competence in evidence-based clinical practice and public health and medical quality improvement methods.
- Participates in education/training efforts involving genetics issues both within and outside the Department and performs other work-related duties as necessary.

Family Health:
The Center for Family Health is one of eight Centers within CDPH, comprised of three divisions; the Genetic Disease Screening Program, Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Program, and the Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program, this Center is committed to protecting and promoting the health individuals, pregnant people, and their children.
Primary functions of the Center for Family Health are to; lead programs that support pregnant people and new parents, collect, analyze, and report California data on the health and well-being of families, screen pregnant people and new babies for life-threatening genetic conditions, assess their programs to understand if they are helping their families towards better health and engage in continuous quality improvement, develop communication and educational materials on topics related to health and pregnancy, infants, and adolescents, and continued commitment to ending inequities in maternal and infant health outcomes.
*The Public Health Medical Officer III will provide guidance to staff on emerging genetic, obstetric, and pediatric issues, and plans and organizes medical consultation for the identification, development, and implementation of best practices and standardized guidelines to support GDSP clinical and research programs.Please note candidates applying for the PHMO classification must be in possession, or in the process of securing approval, of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance, or the California Board of Osteopathic Examiners.
Plans, organizes, and provides medical advice for the identification, development, integration and implementation of best practices and standardized guidelines to support GDSP programs, including the California Newborn Screening Program, the California Prenatal Screening Program, and the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program.
