    CLINICAL LABORATORY MANAGER
    Our health system is located in King City (Monterey County), a friendly community of 14,221 people. We are located in the picturesque southern Salinas Valley of the California Central Coast in Monterey County.

    Located about 155 miles south of San Francisco and 277 miles north of Los Angeles, providing convenient access to all areas of California.

    King City is a gateway to nearby Pinnacles National Park, the Monterey County wine region, and a thriving agricultural area.


    JOB SUMMARY:


    The Lab Manager supervises, coordinates, and participates in activities of personnel performing various chemical, microscopic, and bacteriological tests of body fluids, exudates, skin scraping, and surgical specimens to obtain diagnosis and treatment of disease.

    He/she will individualize patient care based on age-appropriate and developmental needs.

    Should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Salary Range:
    $132,704 - $175,780 per year DOE


    PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS
    Essential Function

    • Directs operations concerning specimen handling, diagnostic testing, and results reporting.
    Specimens are processed following laboratory procedures.
    Physician response and feedback to the proceeding are consistently acceptable.

    Identifies techniques and procedures consistent with current and future practice methods of Medical Staff; maintains close working relationships with key physicians (i.e., orthopedists, primary care, and emergency room).


    • Maintains competence levels of staff.
    Competency requirements are accurately described, and criteria standards are established for all staff job descriptions. The staff attend outside continuing education courses each year. Documentation of attendance at all in-service activities is always maintained. Demonstrates role model attributes and the professional image required to develop the skills and knowledge of others.

    • Maintains a safe and clean working environment.
    Reviews and makes recommendations concerning the monitoring of potential safety hazards. Identifies safety hazards and always takes appropriate corrective action.
    Follows policies outlining standards of hygiene and general safety rules.

    May originate studies in the following areas: Infection control; Equipment safety; Appropriate documentation of patient care; Appropriateness of physician orders/referrals; and Interactions with other departments.


    • Participate in the Performance Improvement Plan for the Laboratory Department.
    Quality control standards are consistently maintained for each Laboratory division.
    Quality control is regularly reviewed in comparison with other facilities and peers.
    Develops and utilizes a defined system of resolving identified problems.
    Provides follow-up monitoring to ensure problem resolution.
    Reports problems and activities to the appropriate Hospital review group.

    • Recommends equipment modification and essential construction in the department.
    Research capital budget requirements; thoroughly prepare and justify capital budget requests.

    • Directs the maintenance of department records and statistics.
    Monitors the preparation, posting, and completion of all records, logs, and statistics. Completes quality control records accurately and within prescribed time requirements.

    • Demonstrates and explains difficult and/or new techniques, tests, and procedures.
    Shows initiative in demonstrating new methods, tests, and/or equipment.
    Regularly provides individual and small groups in-service to assist in the learning process.

    • Calibrates and checks laboratory instruments.
    Regularly inspect instruments and make sure that equipment is in proper working order.

    • Coordinates department purchasing and is responsible for stock levels, reagents, and supplies.
    Determines the types and amounts of supplies and reagents required to meet the needs of the department.
    Equipment, supplies, and materials are always stored following business and safety standards.
    Supply levels are consistently maintained without overstocking.

    • Performs simple maintenance and adjustment of equipment.
    Performs required maintenance procedures as required for various laboratory equipment.
    Develop a contingency plan for equipment malfunction.

    • Prepares the department procedure and policy manual.
    Manuals are consistently updated and reflect complete procedures for the department.
    Draft procedural language for updates and reviews with the Pathologist or Laboratory Director.


    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:
    Bachelor's Degree in the field of Lab Science.

    Work

    Experience:
    Five years of clinical laboratory experience - required.
    Two years of supervisory experience in a hospital setting - preferred


    Licensing Requirements:
    Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license – required


    Physical Demands:
    Must be able to sit and stand/walk for up to 4 hours or more per day.
    Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds for 3 to 4 hours per day.
    Moderate exposure to hazardous waste and chemicals.


    Special Demands:
    Ability to supervise and work cooperatively with others.
    Must be able to delegate duties and maintain efficient standards of operation.
    Exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious disease/needle puncture wounds, anesthetic agents, and chemical agents
