Under general direction, supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of staff responsible for providing support to and serving as an advocate for the rights and protection of victims of domestic violence, misdemeanor DUI, and other related offenses and crimes; participates in the preparation of misdemeanor cases for trial; provides responsible staff support in the prosecution of criminal cases; and assists in the development and implementation of training and public outreach programs.
Essential Functions
The following duties are typical for this classification.
Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review, and participate in the work of staff responsible for providing support to and serve as an advocate for the rights and protection of victims of domestic violence, misdemeanor DUI cases, and other related crimes.
Prepare domestic battery, misdemeanor DUI, and other related cases for trial; collect information from victims and witnesses; interview victims; provide encouragement to come to court; appear in court at assigned trials.
Compile information for domestic violence, misdemeanor DUI, and other assigned cases; order prior conviction status, evidence, certified copies of documents, and other related documents; notify officers of court and prepare and make arrangements for service of subpoenas and other court notifications.
Prepare discovery on domestic violence, misdemeanor DUI, and other assigned cases; review and disseminate information that can be released to the defendant and/or their attorney; copy appropriate discoverable materials; prepare receipts for proper billing of said discovery.
Interact with the City Attorney's Office, Reno Municipal Court, Reno Police Department, defense attorneys, various governmental agencies, and the general public; coordinate activities with the Reno Municipal Court, District Court, Family Court, and Justice Court; request and provide information regarding domestic violence, misdemeanor DUI, and related cases.
Access case information and case status utilizing a variety of computer programs and software; advise witnesses and victims of the status of cases.
Prepare a variety of correspondence, legal papers, and documents including motions, affidavits, and requests; transcribe, proofread, and edit from attorney's notes, dictation, and computer generated drafts.
Maintain assigned office files; File cases alphabetically by month and offense; attach certified mail cards to subpoenas; file various motions and requests; review and assign defense motions and requests; store old cases in boxes.
Complete community needs assessments; analyze the results; recommend and assist in the development and implementation of public outreach and other special events in collaboration with City staff; serve on various committees as assigned.
Provide education and training to the public and prosecutors related to assigned area including the dynamics of domestic violence and victim's needs.
Minimum Qualifications
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Operations, services, and activities of a victim/witness advocacy program.
Effective interviewing, listening, and counseling skills.
Community resources and the availability of those resources.
Case management principles and practices.
Basic practices and procedures of judge and jury trials.
Principles and procedures of legal record keeping.
Methods of research, case analysis, and report preparation.
English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications.
Pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations.
As assigned, characteristics of victims of domestic violence.
Ability to:
Supervise, organize, and review the work of assigned staff involved in the victim/witness advocate programs.
Coordinate and direct victim/witness advocacy programs.
Provide support to and serve as an advocate for the rights and protection of victims of domestic violence, misdemeanor DUI, and related crimes.
Listen and respond to victims with empathy.
Exercise patience and understanding in dealing with victims, witnesses, and defendants including those with mental and physical disabilities, substance abuse problems, and economic barriers.
Gather and analyze case data and information and evaluate options.
Interpret, understand, and apply federal, state and local policies, laws, and regulations; ensure adherence to applicable laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to discovery of case information.
Effectively manage assigned cases.
Prepare a variety of routine legal documents, correspondence, and memoranda.
Prepare and present public presentations in an informative and comprehensible manner.
Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public, attorneys, prosecutors, and other governmental agencies.
Assist in the development and implementation of procedures for assigned area of operation.
Work independently on cases and with victims.
Plan and organize workload in the office and court.
Work in a team based environment to achieve common goals.
Coordinate multiple projects and complex tasks simultaneously.
Meet the physical requirements to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
Education/Training:
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, social work, or a related field.
Experience:
Four years of increasingly responsible social work, counseling, or victim advocacy experience including one year of administrative and/or lead supervisory experience.

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
