    The USC department of Facilities Planning and Management (FPM) – Operations & Maintenance is seeking a Director of Operations with demonstrated superb leadership capabilities to join its team.

    The Work You Will Do

    The Director of Operations is responsible for the daily buildings and grounds maintenance on the University Park and Health Sciences campuses and is also accountable for the Zero Waste program of the University. This role entails setting the vision and direction for Operations within Facilities Planning and Management. Leading by example, the Director of Operations will foster an inclusive culture, monitor performance, provide training, and supervise staff; emphasis will be on empowering employees, adopting a proactive approach to problem-solving, and delivering exceptional customer service.

    The Director of Operations:

    • Plans and develops program objectives and content. Develops people and programs, thinks creatively, and creates a team atmosphere. Researches and identifies trends and needs and establishes program directions accordingly. Assesses quality of program operations. Modifies existing program services or creates new program offerings to maintain or enhance program standing. Coordinates staff recruitment and involvement. Links program with other relevant departments on or off campus as necessary.
    • Develops program operating and administrative policies. Directs the dissemination, interpretation, and application of program policies university-wide and grants exceptions.
    • Directs the delivery of services to targeted program participants or beneficiaries. Provides clear direction and sets goals and priorities to ensure success of organization. Sets and communicates program priorities and performance standards and assesses operations using these criteria. Measures performance through KPI's and adjusts as needed. Provides for quality assurance reviews and addresses areas in need of attention. Provides for the development and maintenance of automated or manual systems and procedures to facilitate program operations.
    • Directly or indirectly manages all staff assigned to the program, usually through subordinate managers or supervisors. Leads and models behaviors that produce an inclusive environment and puts employees first. Determines organizational structure, reporting relationships and short and long-range staffing needs based on program goals. Reviews and approves hiring and salary actions to ensure compliance with policy. Oversees performance appraisal process for program staff and remains informed of any disciplinary actions required.
    • Manages multiple budgets and makes major allocation decisions. Develops and manages program budgets covering operations and sponsored projects. Makes major budgetary and resource allocation decisions. Provides financial status reports as needed.
    • Directs the development of marketing and promotional strategies to include personal networking, publications, newsletters and related communications materials, and events planning. Represents the program in community service activities.
    • Represents the program and university as an authority in field. Responds to requests for information, advice or assistance from colleagues, the media, professional or industry associations, etc.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

    Preferred Qualifications

    The ideal candidate for the position of Director of Operations meets the following preferred criteria:

    • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management or related field
    • More than 7 years of experience at manager level
    • Certified Educational Facilities Professional (CEFP) is highly desirable
    • Proficient in utilizing Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to manage and track operational activities efficiently; demonstrated experience in pulling and analyzing reports from CMMS and other data sources to derive valuable insights for informed decision-making
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing across broad audiences; ability to create a culture of safety; ability to adapt to change; lead and develop teams; utilize technology to achieve efficiencies and effectiveness

    Minimum Qualifications

    All candidates for the position of Director of Operations must meet the following minimum qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree; however, combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education
    • At least 7 years of directly related program management experience overseeing multiple facilities-related operations/programs
    • Expert knowledge in the field of facilities operations (e.g. landscape/grounds, custodial, waste and recycling, etc.)
    • Ability to manage sponsored projects

    The annual base salary range for this position is $124,857 – $150,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
