- Assumes the responsibility of maintenance of the OR department in a patient ready state, including cleaning and stocking of supplies/equipment.
- Applies knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique relative to operative procedures.
- Assists with position, prepping, and draping of the patient.
- Assists with exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging.
- Assists with handling tissue as directed and supervised by the surgeon during the operative procedure
- Applies surgical dressings and stack drain reservoirs.
- Maintains the skill level requirement and functions as evidenced by competent performance in surgical cases and on call for General, Urology, Robotics, Gynecology and non cardiac CVS and Thoracic with completion of the skills checklist.
- Exhibits professional behavior to peers which is demonstrated by maintaining and/or increasing skills needed for personal development, providing a cohesive team environment, and proactive in problem solving.
- Assists with returning patients to their room upon completion of their procedure using an appropriate transporting device, upon request.
- Completion of a course in OR technology required.
- Must already have and maintain or obtain within one year of employment as a surgical technologist, surgical technologist certification.
- Maintains Basic Cardiac Life Support certification unless a doctor's release is provided in which case yearly proficiency must be demonstrated through oral and written testing.
- Is able to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team.
- Is able to perform a variety of duties characterized by frequent change

Position Purpose
Under direct supervision, provides care to patients of all ages during surgical intervention.
Practices directly under the supervision and direction of the surgeon, registered nurse circulator, or physician assistant during the intra-operative phase of patient care.
Is responsible for preparing the operating room for the surgical procedure including the instruments, equipment, and supplies. Maintains the sterile field during the surgical procedure.Maintains competency as described in Brenner's Novice to Expert in the frequently performed cases for the following specialties:
General, Gynecology, Urology (open and closed), Robotics, Podiatry, Plastics, and Non CVS Vascular and Thoracic.
The CST may also help serve in other roles on the surgical team and is expected to second or third or fourth scrub all surgical specialties.

MercyOne Western Iowa serves the needs of individuals in a 33-county area including western Iowa, eastern Nebraska and southeastern South Dakota.
MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, a 238-bed regional facility, is home to the only Level II trauma center in the area - one of only four trauma care facilities in the state to receive verification from the American College of Surgeons - and MercyOne Air Med, a regional helicopter ambulance service.
