Responsible and accountable for accurately abstracting the clinical and demographic data from patients records and coding this data for injury severity and procedures completed.

The Trauma Data Abstractor Registrar reviews patient records to abstract and enter data into the trauma registry. The Trauma Data Abstractor Registrar provides data reports from the trauma registry as requested.

Successful completion of Anatomy and Physiology coursework at an accredited college or university is required and 9 months working as a Trauma Registrar is required.

Required Qualifications:


  • Successful completion of Anatomy and Physiology coursework at an accredited college or university.
  • Associate's Degree in related discipline.
  • Successful completion of a medical terminology course.
  • Participate and pass the most recent version of the AAAM's Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) course within 6 months (180 days) of hire.
  • Participate in a trauma registry course that includes all of the following content: Abstraction; Data Management; Reports/Report Analysis; Data Validation; HIPAA within 6 months (180 days) of hire.
  • Participate in an ICD10 course or an ICD10 refresher course every five years within 6 months (180 days) of hire.
  • 9 months experience performing duties as a Trauma Registrar in an acute care hospital.
  • 3 years work experience in an acute care hospital with exposure to medical terminology and patient medical records.
  • 3 years related professional experience including extensive use of data entry and word processing systems including Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Participate and pass the most recent version of the AAAM's Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) course.
  • Participate in a trauma registry course that includes all of the following content: Abstraction; Data Management; Reports/Report Analysis; Data Validation; HIPAA.
  • Participate in an ICD10 course or an ICD10 refresher course every five years.
  • Certification as a Certified Trauma Registrar and/or CAISS within 2 years of hire.
  • Work experience involving data analysis and presentation, or comparable education.
  • Experience using DI Collector software or similar registry database.
  • Experience with trauma site survey preparation, trauma center structure, and the trauma performance improvement process.
  • Experience with EPIC Health Record System

The amounts listed are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
