    The University of Utah Department of Internal Medicine (DOIM) is seeking an experienced and high-performing professional to join its leadership team.

    The Administrative Director will lead administration, operations, and finance for the department and will foster, facilitate, and ensure excellence and effectiveness in all facets of the Department's administration and financial operations.

    Department of Internal Medicine

    The Department of Internal Medicine (DOIM) is led by Chair John M. Inadomi, MD, AGAF.

    The DOIM's mission is to advance health through excellence in each of the core domains:
    education, patient care, and discovery, through inspiring an engaged, diverse membership, encouraging innovative thinking, and building collaborative partnerships.

    DOIM is the largest department in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine (SOM), with 12 divisions, 450 full-time faculty, 260 other faculty, over 200 advanced practice clinicians, 550 staff, and over 220 residents and fellows.

    One-quarter of SOM teaching is done by DOIM faculty.

    Currently, sponsored research in the department represents approximately one-third of the total extramural dollars awarded to the SOM. Faculty in the DOIM procured over $118 M in extramural grant funding in FY23.

    DOIM exemplifies a collaborative spirit within the University of Utah, maintaining strong research partnerships with the Salt Lake City VA, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Intermountain Health Care, and other internal initiatives within the University such as the Molecular Medicine Program, Immunology, Inflammation & Infectious Diseases Initiative, and the Utah Genome Project.

    Position Summary


    The Administrative Director (AD) directs the strategic initiatives and operations for the DOIM and serves as advisor to the Department Chair.

    The AD partners with the Chair, Vice Chairs, and Division Chiefs in support of all missions of the Department including patient care, teaching, research, services, and community engagement.

    The AD oversees all administrative operations of the Department including finance, research, education, clinical services, and human resources in support of the goals and mission of the University and serves as the administrative liaison for the DOIM with the divisions, affiliate sites (Huntsman Cancer Institute, Huntsman Mental Health Institute, VA Medical Center), Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, Hospitals and Clinics, Medical Group, and Health Sciences.

    Responsibilities


    • Directs the development and implementation of financial services, research administration, clinical services, and human resources as well as providing quality service to a diverse population.
    • Supports the Chair to provide strategic direction for assigned units by setting short-term and long-term goals, estimating budgetary requirements for space and equipment, and planning and implementing special projects and policies.
    • As the administrative liaison for the DOIM, must represent the Department with exceptional professionalism and accountability.
    • Establishes and directs an administrative team at the department level with clarity about department vs. divisional roles. Develops consistent plans for communication of strategic initiatives and goals for divisional administration.
    • Supports the missions of the Department by working closely with each division chief, as defined by each division's unique goals and vision, to develop and/or expand existing programs in the research, education, and clinical missions.
    • Supports the clinical mission of the Department with the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs through development and expansion of clinical programs to meet health system demand; implementation of clinical practice standards; guidelines for training physicians, other providers, and staff on billing processes and procedures; and evaluating clinical productivity measures. Serves as a champion for the exceptional patient experience for the Department developing improved clinic processes and patient access.
    • Supports the research mission of the Department with the Vice Chair for Research. Understands grants and contracts from federal and nonfederal sources and works with leadership to grow the research portfolio. Manages research space, facilities, and resources in coordination with the Department's research administration.
    • Working with the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development, oversees aspects of faculty appointments, promotion/tenure, retention, and non-renewal processes within the Department adhering to School of Medicine and University guidelines.
    • Supports the educational mission in coordination with the Vice Chair for Education including development and review of budgets for residents and fellows, enhancement of opportunities for internal CME and MOC activities, and growth of external CME events.
    • Assists the Vice Chair for Culture and Community to create and implement programs that lead to an inclusive culture, where all faculty, APCs, staff, and trainees are supported to grow and perform at their top potential and where diverse experiences are welcomed to bring about innovation.
    • Collaborates with and provides guidance to faculty and administrative leaders about personnel decisions and actions including training, performance management, and terminations.
    • Forecasts capital and operating budget needs in evaluating and reporting on the unit's market sensitivity, financial analysis, space utilization review, staff performance evaluation, etc.
    • Maintains effective stewardship of the unit's budget while ensuring that funds are used to meet the goals and mission of the University and Department.
    • Works with leadership to direct special interdisciplinary projects having impact on the overall operation and strategic direction of the Department including developing strategies consistent with the University's continuous quality improvement program.
    • Oversees all aspects of human resource management including recruitment and retention of assigned staff.
    • Plays a key role in the recruitment and development of administrative talent at the division level. Will support the individual division administrators to assist each division to reach their division's goals and objectives. Division-level administrators will have a dotted-line reporting responsibility to this position in addition to their reporting responsibilities to their immediate supervisors.
    • Oversees the analysis and determination of appropriate staff mix to support patient/customer needs.
    • Ensures competency of unit management/supervisory staff through the development and/or presentation of educational programs and through on-going staff performance evaluation.
    • Collaborates to market and promote new and existing programs and services to internal and external customers.
    • Participates in committees to establish patient/customer service and administrative plans and policies.
    • Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships.

    Minimum Qualifications


    Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, clinical field, or related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); nine years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, staff management, and effective communications skills required.

    Completion of hospital provided supervisory training within one year of employment may also be required.

    This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.
