(AS&M) is looking for a full-time Modal Safety Engineer to support NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) under the Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering (CMOE) contract.
Overview:
The NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton, VA has established a safety process that designates key personnel with specific responsibilities for ensuring safety of personal and equipment and is integrated into system designs and operational practices.
The model safety engineer (MSE) serves as the resident expert for the review of wind tunnel model systems design and analysis.
The MSE serves as the point of contact to assist Facility Safety Heads (FSH) in interpreting requirements documented in "Wind Tunnel Model Systems Criteria." and verifies that model systems under review are compliant.
The MSE also reviews any structural modifications to wind tunnels and models tested in those facilities.The MSE performs reviews of assigned model systems reports (MSRs), completes a Safety Memo to the FSH and Test Engineer prior to test start, completes any analysis & documentation necessary for Model Protection Safety Systems (MPSS), and creates a file of all documents needed in support of the Safety Memo and test model review.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Type of work includes, but is not limited to:
MSE should possess proficiencies in:
Stress analysis via closed form solutions; both discrete point and pressure loading
FEA modeling; constraints, loads, & validation (e.g., via comparison to closed form solution); Material thermal displacement/stress analysis
Materials; Strengths, cryogenic vs. ambient environment suitability, ferrous/non-ferrous/non-metals familiarity, 3D-printed (anisometric) vs. billet-level (quasi-isometric) properties
Aerodynamic loads, divergence, modal, & aeroelastic stability (flutter) analyses
Fastener analysis; material strengths and torque determinations
Fatigue/Fracture analysis (proficiency in either AFGROW or NASGRO a plus); and Material ultrasonic flaw inspection techniques
Qualifications and Experience:
U.S. Citizenship is required.
BS degree from an accredited engineering school and five (5) to eight (8) years of related engineering experience, or a MS degree and four (4) to six (6) years of related engineering experience, or a Ph.
D. degree and two (2) to four (4) years of related experience.Experience in aero-related model and test equipment fabrication and methods is desired.
Physical Requirements:
Potential exposure to high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, propellants, and the like.
Appropriate PPE and training will be provided for all conditions.
Must be able to walk, stand, bend, twist, and sit for extended periods as well as climb, crawl, and lift up to 35 lbs.
Regular attendance is mandatory (100%).Occasional overtime/work outside the normal schedule may be required (
