    Summary:

    Medical physicists are engaged in the design, optimization, technical evaluation, and delivery of radiotherapy treatment plans.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review patient charts, including initial treatment plans, new chart review, on treatment chart review, and end of treatment chart for completeness and accuracy.
  • Acceptance, commissioning and calibration of therapeutic radiation delivery systems, accessories, and computerized treatment – planning systems.
  • Supervise arrangements for proper maintenance of the equipment and work with the manufacturer to facilitate repairs.
  • Evaluate all equipment used in department for continued utility, appropriateness, reliable performance, and condition, making recommendations on a practical life span, obsolescence, and replacement.
  • Maintain instrument calibration.
  • Research and implementation of new procedures and technology.
  • Determine the need for, specify the requirements of, and have access to dosimetry and treatment planning equipment.
  • Design, implementation and maintenance of a thorough quality management program.
  • Act as a resource for dosimetrists and radiation therapists and together with the Radiation Oncologist, supervise departmental treatment planning activities.
  • Provide physics technical advice, support and training, as needed to all radiation staff.
  • Oversee compliance with state and federal regulations and accepted technical standards related to radiation oncology and general radiation safety.
  • Oversee accreditation compliance of radiation oncology through American College of Radiology.
  • Act as a resource for accreditation efforts of cancer program.
  • Maintain policies and procedures related to radiation therapy.
  • Qualifications:

    Education/Experience:

  • Master's or doctoral degree (preferred) in physics, biophysics, radiological physics, or health physics.
  • Have completed one year of full time training in therapeutic radiological physics.
  • Have completed one year of full time work experience under the supervision of a Radiation Therapy Physicist at a medical institution.
  • License / Certification/Registration:

  • Be certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in Therapeutic radiological physics or Roentgen-ray and gamma-ray physics or X-ray and radium physics or Radiological physics
  • Be certified by the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) in Radiation Oncology Physics; or
  • Certified by the Canadian College of Medical of Physics
  • Registered with Kansas Department of Health & Environment as a provider of radiation services in the area of calibration and compliance surveys of external beam radiation therapy units prior to employment start date.
  • If board eligible, must complete board certification within three years of employment.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities:

    Responsible for the supervision of radiation therapist and dosimetrist.
