    **This is a one-year contract position with the possibility of extension based on funding.

    Learn more at The Policy Director for the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative will work under the direction of the BHHI Director to advance evidence-based policy solutions at the local, state, and federal levels. The Policy Director will lead and direct all policy work across the Initiative. The Policy Director will:
    • Lead the development of deliverables that will advance key priorities of the initiative.
    • Guide team member(s) ensuring their work adheres to program principles
    • Provide strategic direction and guidance to Program members and BHHI leadership
    • Develop and implement BHHI's policy strategy.
    • Develop work plan and policy deliverables for BHHI research projects
    • Conduct training for BHHI staff and faculty to build capacity for translating evidence to policy
    • Core member of BHHI Leadership Team collaborating with lead faculty and executive leadership
    • Lead Program team writing efforts for legislative testimony, briefs, memos, and other related deliverables.
    • Interpret and integrate research into clearly written policy-related deliverables.
    • Work with faculty, staff, and trainees to translate relevant BHHI research to policy guidance.
    • Coordinate with internal UCSF stakeholders including UCSF's Office of Community and Government Relations.
    • Present testimony at CA legislature, local city councils, and other government hearings
    • Present findings at conferences, community meetings, and other venues
    • Adhere to University of California guidelines regarding policy efforts.
    The Policy Director will have a deep understanding of the housing and homelessness policy landscape and have strong experience analyzing and interpreting data to inform policy and program efforts. The Policy Director must be an incredibly skilled writer as much of the job entails writing policy reports, briefs, testimony, and other written products. The Policy Director will have experience translating findings and evidence into policy-relevant materials for specific audiences. The Policy Director will have experience working with legislators and policymakers across the State. In addition, they will independently oversee the policy program and represent the program to outside organizations. They will oversee all administrative operations, finance, human resources, and facilities for the policy program. Lastly, they with BHHI on formulating short-term planning and procedures.

    Based on UC policy, the final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals.

    Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

    Department Description

    The Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI) is a research and policy initiative within the Division of Vulnerable Populations. The BHHI is an academic program with a focus on developing and disseminating evidence-based solutions to prevent and end homelessness. The BHHI aims to advance and transform policy and practice related to homelessness through 1) conducting policy-oriented research, using a strategic science orientation and community-engaged practices; 2) analyzing existing research and translating it to policy and practice audiences; 3) disseminating findings to key decision-makers in policy, practice and the general public; 4) providing policy translation at local, state, and federal levels; 5) developing and maintaining relationships with a broad array of stakeholders; and 6) training the next generation of policy-oriented researchers.

    The Division of Vulnerable Populations is a research division within the UCSF Department of Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital which focuses on policy-oriented research regarding structural and social determinants of health. The DVP houses the BHHI, Amend, and the UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations (CVP). CVP is a multidisciplinary research center focused on providing evidence to decrease health inequities through changes at the level of clinical care, community, and policy. To achieve these aims, CVP focuses on diverse topics, such as homelessness, food insecurity, immigrant health, and increasing diversity in the biomedical workforce. Partnering with the community, CVP is tackling some of the most challenging problems in society through discovery, innovation, policy, and advocacy.

    Required Qualifications

    • Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, etc.) Or equivalent experience
    • 5 years of related work experience; and/or equivalent experience/training
    • Academic background and experience in a selected area of research.
    • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
    • Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
    • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
    • Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
    • Experience working with people experiencing homelessness, housing instability, and/or other vulnerable populations
    • Experience writing policy reports, briefs, and documents for policymakers
    • Experience with statistical data analysis and interpretation
    • Experience presenting findings to large audiences
    • Strong writing skills
