JOB SUMMARY:

This position performs a wide range of manual labor functions in support of the Department of Public Works.

Under direct supervision of a maintenance supervisor, performs miscellaneous physical tasks related to the maintenance of County roads and solid waste management and parks systems.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Provides cordial, responsive and accurate customer service.

Operates hand, motorized and electrical tools.

Performs routine maintenance and makes minor repairs to vehicles and small equipment

Rakes stone and other activities related to road re-surfacing.

Cleans drainage ditches.

Removes tree limbs and debris from roadway.

Trims bushes and trees.

Performs traffic control by flagging.

Collects, removes, processes and/or disposes of solid waste.

Operates six-wheel dump truck, front-end loader, and tractor mower.

Assists in operation of stone box in re-surfacing operations.

Plows and removes snow.

Performs other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


Equipment Operator I
A High School Diploma or a GED. Six months of related experience or training in heavy equipment operation or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations


Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver's License issued by the Maryland MVA (or equivalent) required.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


Regularly required to stand, walk and use hands to handle or feel objects, tools and controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear.

Occasionally required to sit.

Requires regular lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is exposed to vibration. The employee may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
