    Stanford Libraries seeks a Data Curator for Interdisciplinary Sustainability to join a team of existing and new data curation professionals at Stanford Libraries.

    We conceive of the area of Interdisciplinary Sustainability broadly and in alignment with the newly-inaugurated Doerr School of Sustainability's mission to draw upon "a deep understanding of Earth, climate, and society to create solutions at a global scale." As a member of Stanford Libraries' Research Data Services (RDS) department, the Data Curator for Interdisciplinary Sustainability will play a key role in advancing the Libraries' data curation program. Alongside a growing team of data curation professionals within RDS, this Data Curator will primarily assist Stanford researchers from the Doerr School of Sustainability in finding, processing, managing, analyzing and preserving data. The Data Curator is expected to work with data in areas such as climate, environmental justice, social science, and engineering. (See for a list of the Doerr School's current research focus.)

    About the Position:

    The Data Curator will collaborate with subject matter experts in the Branner Earth Sciences Library and the Miller Marine Biology Library, the Libraries' acquisitions and metadata specialists, Digital Library Systems & Services, and data management professionals in the Doerr School to ensure that researcher-generated data are FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable), especially in light of new guidance from the Office of Science and Technology Policy. This may include advising researchers on the use of domain repositories, Stanford Digital Repository, and other data sharing and preservation platforms. As needed, this position will also contribute to the acquisition and accessioning of vendor-licensed data into the Stanford Libraries collection, as well as helping make available scientific data more findable and accessible.The Data Curator for Interdisciplinary Sustainability will work at the intersection of existing library practices and new opportunities for directly engaging with faculty and students in research data management.

    The Data Curator will have the opportunity to contribute to the Libraries' data archiving and provisioning infrastructure, including the Data Catalog, a major project planned for the Research Data Services group.These contributions include considering vendor and researcher data for inclusion in the Catalog, and in the development of a metadata strategy and workflows that will enable the desired features and functionality of this service. The Data Curator may also contribute to outlining the user needs that will drive the functionality included in the Data Catalog.

    Core Duties*:

    ·Assist researchers the Doerr School of Sustainability, and other researchers working on sustainability issues, with the discovery, curation, analysis, publication, and sharing of relevant datasets.

    ·Serve as a resource for Stanford Libraries in technical issues around licensed datasets relevant to Sustainability studies, including tasks around loading, storage, researcher access, and others.

    ·Contribute to data cataloging efforts at Stanford, ensuring that sustainability datasets are well described, relevant, findable, and accessible.

    ·Other workshops, individual consultations, and other teaching activities relevant to the data lifecycle as concerns sustainability data.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education and Experience:

    ●Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and two or more years of relevant experience in a relevant library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    ●Demonstrated understanding of data-intensive research processes in academic context.

    ●Demonstrated experience managing, analyzing, and otherwise working with research datasets using analytic tools and/or statistical software packages.

    ●Demonstrated knowledge of issues and technical challenges related to data curation, including format migration, preservation, metadata, discovery, provenance, and data access.

    ●Familiarity with computational methods relevant for data curation, such as text & data mining, data science techniques, data-driven research, or related skills.

    ●Ability and experience in the areas of instruction, training, workshops, best practices

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with researchers and support staff across campus units.
  • Familiarity with concepts in data visualization or data mining
  • Demonstrated familiarity with relevant standards for research metadata (e.g., EML, ISO19115, DarwinCore, , etc.) and data management practices and requirements.

  • Demonstrated understanding of FAIR guidelines and issues around Open Access.
  • Physical Requirements:

    ·Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.

    ·Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

    ·Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).

    ·Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.

    ·Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds

    Working Conditions:

    The expected pay range for this position is $83,000 to $106,000 per annum.
    Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

    This is an on-campus position, with the expectation of providing services both in person and to remote patrons.
