With 200 years of history, around 35,000 students, more than 6,000 employees, and an excellent reputation both nationally and internationally, the University of Bonn is one of the most prestigious universities in Germany and has been recognized as an excellence university.

The Chair of Food Microbiology and Hygiene (Prof. Dr.

André Lipski) is seeking a doctoral candidate (65%) for a DFG-funded research project for a period of three years starting in spring/summer 2023.

The project aims to investigate synergistic and antagonistic interactions in microbial mixed cultures from silage, as well as the effects of defined mixed cultures as starter cultures on the ensiling of plant material.

This is a sub-project within a collaboration with agricultural scientists from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Bonn.

Your tasks will include:

  • Cultivation and biochemical characterization of microorganisms, particularly lactic acid bacteria, from silage
  • Investigation of biochemical activity in defined mixed cultures, detection of quorum-sensing signaling molecules
  • Characterization of biochemical behavior of defined mixed cultures in multisensor mini-bioreactor systems simulating ensiling processes. This task will be carried out in collaboration with agricultural scientists.
  • Microbiome analysis in silage using 16S/ITS amplicon metagenomics
  • Differential gene expression analysis in defined mixed cultures to elucid
