    Description/Duties & Responsibilities

    This position will assist with the coordination and oversight of the day-to-day operations of the City's Youth Sports program.

    This includes scheduling, training, and supervising assigned part-time temporary seasonal staff, contract officials, and/or volunteers as well as performing a variety of programmatic and administrative support functions for all sports leagues, clinics, camps, and classes offered to over 5,000 participants annually.

    This position is required to work a Tuesday-Saturday schedule, including nights, weekends, and some holidays. This schedule will fluctuate based on program and operational needs.


    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Provides customer service to program participants and the general public, including responding to public inquiries, supplying accurate information, addressing and resolving difficult situations and complaints in a timely manner, and fulfilling customer needs over the phone, via e-mail, and onsite at program locations
    • Assists with day-to-day planning, coordinating, and implementing of youth sports programs, classes, and special events; creates practice and game schedules; forms leagues and teams; facilitates player drafts
    • Assists with the training, supervision, scheduling, and directing of part-time temporary seasonal staff, as well as contract officials, referees, umpires, scorekeepers, and gym/field attendants; evaluates performance and provides constructive feedback
    • Assists with planning, implementing, and evaluating sports programs, tournaments, and special event activities
    • Assists with the administration of sports officials that includes a yearly certification training, performance tracking, and provides applicable program training, discipline, and appreciation methodology
    • Oversees and tracks inventory and purchases supplies and equipment needed for youth sports programs
    • Uses computer programs and registration software for developing teams and leagues, creating practice and game schedules, enrolling participants, and tracking participation information
    • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with City employees, coaches, officials, volunteers, and the public
    • Conducts research and development to identify improvements to operations and programming
    • Attends City trainings, staff meetings, and committee meetings
    Education and Experience


    • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
    • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Recreation or related field is
    highly desirable


    • One year of experience working in recreation or community services, preferably in assisting with youth sports programs
    • Supervisory and leadership experience is
    highly desirable


    • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver license and a good driving record
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, the following American Red Cross certification: CPR/AED/First Aid (and instructor authorizations are
    desirable )


    • Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year, the following National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS) certification: Certified Youth Sports Administrator
    Knowledge and Abilities


    • Strong customer service skills and the ability to handle conflict and communicate in a tactful and positive manner
    • Knowledge of recreation and sports programming
    • Knowledge of sports rules and regulations, including those established by the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation (SCMAF), The National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS), and the ability to explain these rules to program participants and ensure compliance with these rules and regulations
    • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to quickly and effectively resolve problems, including those related to recreation programs
    • Ability to lead staff to effectively provide quality recreation programs
    • Ability to follow and enforce City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others
    • Ability to learn and effectively utilize the William S. Hart School District's online gymnasium reservation software program, Facilitron
    • Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and positively, both verbally and in writing
    • Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of tasks in an effective and timely manner
    • Ability to lead a team, be a strong team member, and work both independently and as part of a work group
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with City employees, the public, volunteers, and outside organizations
    • Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel and the ability to perform general office duties
    • Strong work ethic and a high level of integrity and professionalism
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
    • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and be exposed to fumes, dust, or other air contaminants
    • Ability to lift, drag, and push office supplies and sports equipment weighing up to 25 pounds; position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, etc.

Only degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation will be accepted.


    As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency.

    Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.


    Compensation includes enrollment in California Public Employees' Retirement System as a replacement for Social Security plus a competitive benefits package.

    All appointments are made at step 1 of the salary range unless otherwise authorized by the City Manager.
