    Contributes to the Hospital's mission by being responsible and accountable for the operational decision making for the Laboratory during the evening and night shifts and performing adequate hand offs to ensure continuity in the night shift.

    This hands-on leadership role impacts our patient's care by ensuring the evening and night shift operations maintain the same level of professional, accuracy and customer service expected of all Laboratory operations.

    JOB FUNCTIONS

    As part of the Laboratory team, this supervisory position:


    • Oversees all laboratory operations, including clinical, front-end and phlebotomy functions, during the evening and night shift. Assigns functions to optimize efficiency, ensuring staff are operating within their job expectations.
    • Maintains generalist clinical knowledge and competence to be able to troubleshoot issues in all laboratory sections. Acts as the first point of contact for Laboratory staff on the shift to triage issues and problems. Escalates issues and involves specialists as appropriate to ensure optimum operations, quality of care and continuity between shifts.
    • Develops and promotes collaborative and collegial relationships with physicians and interdepartmental personnel in order to enhance Laboratory operations and liaisons between the other Laboratory leaders and the shift staff.
    • Works collaboratively with the laboratory section supervisors and the Operations Manager in implementation of operations, performance improvement, and compliance related initiatives for the shift and the department as a whole. Updates staff on department and hospital news. Allows forum for ideas/suggestions. Holds regularly scheduled department meetings.
    • Fosters a climate of clinical and professional excellence.
    • Troubleshoots operational issues and customer service calls and complaints. In the interest of maintaining continuity between shifts, keeps other members of the Laboratory leadership team informed, addressing the short term issue and recommending and/or working towards long-term resolution and improvements with the rest of the laboratory leadership team.
    • Collaborates with lab section supervisors regarding performance management of the staff to ensure clinical competence is maintained and clinical quality is enhanced. Fosters a commitment to the PROMISE standards.
    • Interviews, hires, orients, trains, evaluates and when necessary disciplines staff. Precepts and mentors staff so to expand their knowledge and competence in laboratory testing, operations, processes and PROMISE behavior/skills.
    • Creates, monitors and adjusts schedules and hours worked by staff to ensure fairness, efficiency and fiscal prudence.
    • Ensures quality control for shift is in compliance with accreditation standards. Addresses quality issues within field of personal-competence directly. Promptly collaborates with other Lab Section supervisors for other laboratory areas.
    • Responds to supply, equipment, and infrastructure issues timely to ensure optimum operations and equipment quality and long-term equipment maintenance and life.
    • Enforces the expectation of maintaining a clean and safe work environment in order to present a professional impression of facilities and fosters our culture of safety.
    • Functions as a Medical Technologist.
    • Performs tests using both/either manual methods or automated instrumentation which require fine motor coordination and manual dexterity. Ensures specimen integrity throughout the process.
    • Performs quality control checks and equipment maintenance, adhering to high quality standards.
    • Reviews and inputs quality control and patient results into the electronic medical records system in a timely manner so clinicians and patients get their results as quickly as possible. Expedites results to clinicians for stat and critical results.
    • Troubleshoots test anomalies and system problems in a logical manner to ensure accurate tests.
    • Maintains documentation, reports and quality checks to ensure the laboratory is in compliance with regulatory agencies, accreditation and Hospital policies and procedures.
    • Monitors work flow through pending reports.
    • Takes status and result requests and other questions from patients and clinicians in a timely and professional manner.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education:

    • Required: Bachelor's degree in a Medical Technology related field.

    Experience:

    • Required: At least three (3) years experience as a Medical Technologist with successful leadership experience.
    • Preferred: Supervisory experience.

    Other Skills/Knowledge:

    Required:

    • For safety and quality reasons, must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English with patients, visitors and fellow members of the hospital team.

    OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS:

    • Professional Commitment Requirements: Keep abreast of developments in the field and/or licensure through continuing education, participation in professional organizations or a combination of both.
    • On-call: To ensure adequate handoffs and effective communication between shifts, may receive calls from other shifts from time to time.
    • Schedule requirements: Generally scheduled for the evening shift with occassional hours in the night shift to ensure coverage and knowledge of operatoins, Schedule will need to adjust periodically for meetings, trainings and other issues that would normally be scheduled during primary business hours.
    • Travel requirements: Position is expected to rotate as needed between Laboratory locations to ensure appropriate supervision and direction during the off-shifts.

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

    • Reports to the Laboratory Operations Manager.
    • Responsible for supervising the work of others.
