    Description
    VCU Medical Center in downtown Richmond is the health hub of an amazing community.

    We are excited to open our newest unit. The Short Stay Unit (SSU) is an 8-bed unit located on the 4th floor of the Main Hospital.

    This new unit is part of our commitment to providing high-quality care at the right time in the right place.

    The unit will care for the surgical, transplant, and cardiac populations needing general and progressive level of care.

    SSU will initiate care to patients needing access to health system services from outside locations and also support needs of same day or next day patients with a discharge order.

    Our team consists of highly engaged interdisciplinary team members focused on quality patient care and outcomes in a patient centered environment.

    It is a dynamic and fast-paced environment rich with opportunities for learning. The SSU facilitates a healthy work environment through shared governance and teamwork. Our SSU team fosters learning, research participation, and creation of evidence-based practices.

    The Nurse Manager ensures that excellent patient care is provided by a nursing staff of sufficient number and competency to meet patient needs.

    Care is delivered in an environment that is healthy, healing and respectful to all patients, visitors and staff.


    The Nurse Manager provides quality customer service to patients of all ages, their families, visitors, medical staff, clinicians and co-workers, ensuring that everyone will be treated courteously, quickly and with respect.

    This role establishes and maintains an environmental control plan, coordinates materials management for the department, assists in monitoring clinic activities.

    Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
    Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible

    Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
    Current RN Licensure in Virginia AHA BLS Certification or equivalent

    Experience


    REQUIRED:
    5 years of relevant clinical experience with 2 of those years of progressive leadership and/or supervisory/management experience

    PREFERRED:
    Experience in academic medical center environment

    Education/training


    REQUIRED:
    Masters degree in Nursing or a related field or within one semester of completion.

    If the Master's degree is not in nursing then it is required to have a BSN from an accredited school.

    PREFERRED:
    Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited program
    Certification in specialty area

    Independent action(s) required:

    All day-to-day operations of the unit are handled independently.

    Advice and guidance are sought from the Director on an as needed situational basis and when there is a major impact on activity outside the unit.

    Actions that are taken without prior approval include daily operational functions and leadership of staff.

    With Guidance of Supervisor; advice and guidance are sought for termination of employees, handling employee grievances, review of annual unit goals and budget, approval on unit guidelines and procedures and review of staff annual performance evaluations.

    Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable):

    All employees of the nursing unit report to this position; however, supervisory responsibilities may be delegated as appropriate.


    Additional position requirements:
    Required frequent visibility on all shifts and weekends to enhance staff communication and monitor staff effectiveness.
