General Job Description
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting activities at TRP, including departmental functions, multi-family rental properties, and government funding.

The Controller plays a direct role in ensuring the timely preparation of financial reports, materials for annual audits, payroll procedures, and accounting policies.

This role involves supervising a Payroll Accountant, Accounts Payable Specialist, and an Assistant Controller.

The Controller collaborates with other departments, staff, and management to advance the organization's mission.


Main Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares and assesses all monthly financial statements for TRP, such as balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow projections. Ensures monthly financial statements are distributed to TRP leadership by the 15th of each month.
  • Manages the timely and accurate completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closing processes
  • Reviews monthly financial reports with key departments, providing guidance on necessary adjustments.
  • Establishes and implements accounting policies and procedures following generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable regulations, including GAAP and local, state, and federal tax filings, while preparing for potential future regulations
  • Supervises the preparation, maintenance, and reconciliation of accrual schedules for all accounts.
  • Leads the accounting team in preparing for annual audits and the 990 Tax return.
  • Compiles necessary reporting packages customized for each investor, lender, or other stakeholders, ensuring the information is timely and relevant.
  • Participates in mandatory organizational programs, board meetings, committees, and staff meetings.
  • Carries out other assigned duties.
  • Acts as a backup for payroll and accounts payable functions as needed.
  • Supervises and mentors staff to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and foster professional development.

Performance Criteria

-Consistent completion of financial statements by the 15th of every month.

  • No issues identified in consolidated and federal funds audits.
  • Effective communication with program managers regarding their financial status.

Key Qualifications and Skills

-Bachelor's degree in accounting required. CPA certification preferred. Minimum of ten years' accounting experience.

  • Nonprofit accounting experience is essential, with exposure to Governmental funding and real estate development or property management being advantageous.
  • Proficiency in MIP or fund accounting software, Yardi or property management systems, and ADP is highly desirable.
  • Ability to enhance business processes and uphold high standards of work quality.
  • Proficient in presenting information to senior management, public audiences, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Capable of working collaboratively in teams and engaging with others.
  • Demonstrates adherence to the highest ethical standards.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is strongly preferred.

  • Must meet strict deadlines consistently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends, especially during audit periods.

Position Type & Compensation
Full-Time, Exempt. Salary based on experience.
