Role Overview:

  • Administer comprehensive environmental health and safety programs for Northwestern University's academic and research communities.
  • Oversee safety compliance of research laboratories by inspecting assigned research spaces, providing follow-up assistance, and preparing summary reports.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform risk assessments, hazard analysis, safety audits, and promote safe work practices.
  • Collaborate with principal investigators, researchers, and administrators to develop safety policies and strategies.
  • Be a specialist for the laboratory safety group on the Evanston campus.
  • Support laboratory emergencies, incident investigations, and other safety services.

Job Requirements:

  • Carry a cell phone and pager during work hours, and be capable of hazardous materials response.
  • Physically able to lift 50 pounds, wear chemical protective equipment, and pass a pre-employment physical evaluation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in research laboratories or safety.

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, time management, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in biology, chemistry, or related field.
  • 4+ years of experience in a research laboratory or safety profession.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and biological practices.
