    Job Overview

    Utilities Maintenance Operator is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and construction of underground utility piping and appurtenances in field conditions for the Public Utilities Department.

    Ideal Candidate

    The ideal candidate will have experience in operating various hand tools and specialized, light, and heavy equipment. Preferably the candidate will possess knowledge of water and reclaimed water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Candidate must have the ability and willingness to work outside in a subtropical climate, adverse weather conditions, and high noise levels. The job also requires lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, climb ladders up to 35 feet, and work in confined spaces and manholes. The ideal candidate will also have the flexibility to work overtime, rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. As well as the ability and willingness to respond to emergency situations such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other natural and/or unnatural crises to provide for public health and safety and possibly working extended hours during times of emergency. Candidate must possess a valid Class "A" or "A"-Restricted Commercial Driver's License with combination, air brakes, and tanker endorsements within one year from date of hire.

  • Assist in setting up well-point systems for de-watering construction and maintenance sites; erects and dismantles shoring/trench box.
  • Assists in excavating work site, as required to facilitate installation, maintenance, or repair of water, reclaimed water, or wastewater lines and restoring site to original condition when work is complete.

    Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; AND

  • Possession of a permit Class "A" or "A"-Restricted Commercial Driver's License with combination, air brakes, and tanker endorsements within 6 months of hire.
  • NOTE:

    Employees in this class designated as a "trainee" will serve a one-year probationary period and within that time frame must obtain:

  • A State of Florida Class 3 Water Distribution System Operator License in accordance with Florida Administrative Code, Chapter 62-602, Drinking Water.
  • A Class "A" or "A-Restricted" Commercial Driver's License with combination, air brakes and tanker endorsements
  • Must complete all applicable FEMA/Emergency Operations courses.
  • Upon certification by the Agency Head or designated representative of successful completion of training, incumbents will be promoted to a Class 3 Utilities Maintenance Operator. The training period may be extended by the Agency to which the position is assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; AND
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Possession of Class "A"-Restricted Commercial Driver's License with combination, air brakes, and tanker endorsements.
  • Possession of a current State of Florida Class 3 Water Distribution System Operator License or higher.
  • OR

    Valid Florida Class C or higher water treatment plant operator license.

    NOTE:

    Employees in this class must obtain:

  • A Class "A" or "A-Restricted" Commercial Driver's License with combination, air brakes and tanker endorsements within 12 months of placement in position.

  • Emergency Management Responsibilities

    In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee's department, the County's Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.

    Career Progression

    Employees in this broadband classification that acquire the competencies and minimum qualifications for the next tier will automatically advance to the new tier upon submission of appropriate documentation of qualifications. Additionally, employees in tier 1 trainee positions will be required to complete their initial probationary period successfully in order to advance to the next tier.
