RESPONSIBILITIES:


PURPOSE
OF POSITION**Under the supervision of a professional nurse, a Psychiatric Social Health Technician (PSHT), performs technical and non-professional nursing procedures, as well as supportive activities provided to the child/adolescent, adult and geriatric population, encapsulating the Primary Nursing Model and Jean Watson's Theory of Caring.


AREAS
OF
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists with the admissions, transfer and discharge of patients according to established policy and procedures.

  • Provides safe, individualized, appropriate, agespecific nursing care, based on physical, psychosocial, cultural, educational and nutritional need of the patient, including patients with addictive diseases and dual diagnosis (Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers).
  • Monitors activities of patients on observation levels.
  • Provides a safe environment for patients at risk for falls.
  • Demonstrates awareness of the effect of the physiological changes (decrease vision, hearing and speaking) when utilizing verbal/written skills to communicate with the elderly.
  • Assists in preventive measures and crisis interventions (i.e. suicide, extreme agitation, elopement)
  • Assists with emergency interventions based on clinical manifestation (i.e. choking, respiratory arrest and cardiac arrest).
  • Obtains and records blood pressure, temperature, and pulse and respiration rate in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Ensures and respects privacy and comfort while rendering care.
  • Uses therapeutic communication techniques appropriate to patient's age, need and response.
  • Conducts/supervises group activities that assist in promoting patients ADL (activities of daily living) and socializing skills (i.e. community meetings, orientation, hygiene, and grooming, remotivation Group, rap sessions, table games, group play).
  • Reports changes in patient's behavior to the Nurse Manager/Patient Care Coordinator.
  • Assists and /or supervises patients with their ADL (activities of daily living) skills such as hygiene, and dining.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with staff, patients and visitors to promote teamwork, efficiency customer service and to provide quality trauma informed recoveryoriented care.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings and other meetings.
  • Obtains patients census, via patient count at the beginning and end of tour of duty.
  • Assists in admission and discharge procedures as directed by the nurse and assists in regulation of visitors

  • Grooming, bed making, use of washer and dryer.
  • Accompanies patients to and from school, gym, clinics and other scheduled activities
  • Searches packages brought in by visitors, ensure they are wearing Hospital issued ID and instructs patients and visitors regarding unit rules.
  • Maintains confidentiality and security of data and information in accordance with Patient's rights policies.
  • Selects toys and playroom activities consistent with the age and developmental stage of the child/adolescent patient.
  • Follows Board of Education guidelines for continuing education of school aged child/adolescent during hospitalization.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of special services restrictions/holds on the child/adolescent patient, i.e. Social Service, Administration of Children Services.
  • Complies with KCHC and departmental policies for safety, quality improvement and infection control.
  • Participates in unit/departmental Quality Improvement activities.
  • Maintains level of competency by attending continuing education programs and other activities Consistent with area of clinical practice and population served.
  • Adheres to organization policy for annual education, annual assessment and inservice education.
  • Documents observations in accordance with hospital policy and regulatory agencies guidelines.
