    Description
    Job Title: Scientist Performs research and development at an innovative food and nutritional products company. This position requires work with plant proteins and carbohydrates to assess and improve function in order to create and develop novel plant-based products. These products will include functional foods, medical foods and highly nutritional food and beverages. The candidate shall be innovative, proactive, dependable, flexible and have good record-keeping practices. Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Identifying, isolating, characterizing and modifying proteins and carbohydrates to improve functionality in plant-based foods and beverages.
  • Leading experiments and process development efforts involving protein and carbohydrate biochemistry, structure and biotransformation.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams on R&D projects and product commercialization efforts relating to protein and carbohydrate chemistry.
  • Promoting innovation by tracking new developments in relevant scientific fields in order to identify and pursue strategic product development opportunities.
  • Train research assistants, students, and other related staff in research techniques and analysis.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
    • Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. with 0-5 years of experience in biochemistry, protein chemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, plant biology, plant science, biology or related life science field is preferred.
  • Expertise in protein characterization, including enzymatic and instrumental methods.
  • Experience with analytical method development to characterize proteins utilizing gel electrophoresis, including SDS-PAGE, enzyme activity assays, and protein isolation and purification.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques.
  • Ability to work well in a team.
  • High standards for excellence and attention to detail.
    • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience characterizing carbohydrates using enzymatic assays, HPLC, GC, size exclusion chromatography and other methods of chromatography.
  • Experience in grain science, plant science, food proteins, lipids, vitamins, and other nutritional food components.
  • Patents and publications demonstrating an ability to innovate.

  • Research Technologist will spend 80-90% of time at U. Buffalo Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Science (CBLS) located at 701 Ellicott St, Buffalo, NY 14203.
  • Occasionally required to work at the main R&D lab located at 1150 Maple Rd., Elma, NY 14059.
    • Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds when required.
