- Soliciting input from personnel in R&D and non-R&D functions (, Sales/Marketing, Manufacturing/Operations, etc.) to jointly define project goals and performance targets for each development project
- Computational modeling (, using commercially available software packages or equivalent) of optical performance/aesthetics of coating designs, employing existing and/or new materials, to identify, refine, and optimize designs for thin film interference coatings which meet product requirements (, spectral performance requirements, aesthetic requirements, durability requirements)
- In addition to using an established suite of thin film materials, use creativity and a deep understanding of composition/structure/processing/properties relationships to develop novel thin film materials and implement them in multilayer coatings for use in architectural glazing, automotive glazing, specialty glazing, and other applications
- Characterizing optical properties (, refractive index, extinction coefficient) of thin film materials using spectroscopic ellipsometry and other optical techniques
- Conducting experiments in a laboratory environment, and in a production plant environment as needed, pursuant to the invention, development, and commercialization of new materials/coatings/technologies/products/processes
- Analysis/interpretation of data
- Summary of results/conclusions
- Documentation of results
- Communication of results/conclusions in meetings and/or presentations to stakeholders including personnel within R&D, executive-level stakeholders, and personnel in other functions (, Sales/Marketing, Manufacturing/Operations, Quality Assurance, Technical Services, etc.)
- Scale-up/transfer of coatings onto production coaters in Vitro's manufacturing plants
- Working as a member of a diverse team, comprising R&D personnel (, scientists, engineers, engineering specialists, and technicians) and non-R&D personnel as enumerated above, pursuant to the job responsibilities/tasks/activities as described above
- Most work will be conducted in a laboratory environment and in an office environment, but some work in a manufacturing environment (, at a Vitro factory/manufacturing plant) will be required from time to time
- Frequency of travel varies and is dependent upon what is required to advance any given R&D project. Up to about 25% travel (averaged over < 12 months) may be required at times, but this is an estimated upper limit. Travel usually averages substantially lower than 25% on an annual basis
- During travel and while working at Vitro plants or similar environments, travel and/or work during some portion of weekend/evening hours is sometimes required
- Physics/chemistry of condensed matter (, solid-state physics or solid-state chemistry), including deep fundamental knowledge of, experience in, and creativity in, tailoring composition and structure of materials, and/or developing/optimizing deposition processes, to achieve targeted properties/performance (, optical, electronic, mechanical, chemical/environmental properties/performance) of such materials
- Physics/chemistry/materials science of thin films (, thin film nucleation and growth; microstructure of thin films; optical, electrical/electronic structure, mechanical, tribological, thermodynamic, and/or chemical properties of thin films)
- Optical physics of thin films (, optical thin film interference filters)
- Design of multilayer thin film optical coatings using optical modeling software (, Essential Macleod, OptiLayer, FilmStar, TFCalc, or equivalent)
- Optical characterization of thin film coatings using spectroscopic ellipsometry

This position is focused on research and development of thin film coatings, deposited using vacuum based vapor-phase coating deposition technologies (, sputter deposition), mainly pursuant to the development of new coated glass products for various markets including architectural glazing (,windows), automotive glazing, and specialty glazing. These coatings employ the physics of optical
interference to achieve desired spectral profiles to manage the glazing's transmission/reflection/absorption of electromagnetic radiation. In addition to designing and developing coatings that employ an established suite of materials, the candidate will use their creativity and expertise in materials science/chemistry/physics to identify, and conduct research and development of, new thin film materials and/or processes that will enable improved performance and/or new functionalities of such coatings. This position may also involve research and
development of coatings for applications in markets other than architectural glazing, automotive glazing, and specialty glazing.
Responsibilities
Plan and conduct research and development pursuant to invention of new technologies and development of new thin film materials, products, and processes, including but not necessarily limited to the following activities:
Qualifications
