Position Summary: The Nurse Manager will overseethe operations of an after-hours phone triage line serving the villages of theYukon-Kuskokwim (YK) Delta. This vital role involves ensuring efficient andeffective triage services, managing day-to-day operations, and contributing tothe setup and implementation of the triage line. The position requires acombination of clinical expertise, strong leadership skills, and a commitmentto delivering high-quality healthcare services to remote communities. Theincumbent is an expert in human factors, patient safety, and the use oftechnology to optimize care delivery processes and effectively communicatepatient care activity. This role is responsible for effective processdesign, development and implementation of this new line of service in collaborationwith multiple departments including: RAVEN EHR team for patient encounterdocumentation and reports, clinicians, departmental leadership, Quality,Patient Safety, Accreditation and Licensure Departments and Information Systemsstaff to clarify needs, prioritize requests, design workflow to fit withelectronic systems, execute change, and facilitate adaptation to the RAVEN EHR.Demonstrates independent decision making as appropriate in evaluation of triagecalls, as well as training and development of the phone triage staff for thecall center based on YKHC established protocol and policies and procedures.Determines feasibility and advisability of system changes for Quality Assuranceand Process Improvement. The incumbent may serve as the primary instructor fornew and existing staff in the team. The Nurse Manager may be expected tocomplete other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications: Toperform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform eachessential duty satisfactorily. Minimum Education - Must have completed a programof education in Nursing from an NLN approved institution. BachelorsDegree in Nursing (BSN); Masters preferred.
Minimum Experience - Minimum 5 years of clinicalnursing experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership or managerial role.
License, Certification, Registration. Must be licensed in good standing in theState of Alaska as a Registered Nurse. Current BLS. The successfulcandidate will be required to pass and maintain competencies for this position.Experience in emergency nursing, telehealth, or triage services is highlydesirable.
Leadership Skills Demonstrated ability toimplement and manage healthcare services and programs. Strong leadership andteam management skills.
Equipment/Tools
Medical equipment as appropriate for position. Musthave computer skills needed to access computerized medical records. Officeequipment (i.e. computer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine).
Specialized Knowledge and Skills - Proficientoral and written communication skills. Excellent communication andinterpersonal skills. Knowledge of healthcare regulations and standards. Ableto practice nursing as described in the Alaska Status regarding the practice ofRegistered Nursing. Cognitive and technical knowledge required with the abilityto manage care across the continuum of care. Possess the ability forindependent actions within prescribed limits. Able to utilize the nursingprocess in the provision of patient care. Able to administer treatments, medications,provide education, and collaborate with other professions.
Desirable Skills- Familiarity with the healthcareneeds and challenges of remote and indigenous communities. Experience inQuality Assurance and Improvement programs. Proficiency in telehealthtechnologies and electronic health records (EHR). Crisis management andemergency response skills.
General Responsibilities- Will be expected to be asneeded with the Phone Triage Line, to identify if the particular issue is onethat can be handled by the IT department, or one that would better be handledby Application Management Services (AMS). Responsible for support of overflowcalls at times of high volume. Willing to provide backup support when callvolumes are high or staffing is low.
Supervisory Responsibilities- Supervisesa phone triage staff as required to handle call volume. Serves as consult andtrainer to staff on the Triage Team.
