- The cancer genetics counselor is a full-time position with specialized education. The counselor's primary focus is to provide family history assessment and cancer genetic counseling for patients/families with cancer and or at risk for cancer. Patients/families are referred for a broad spectrum of cancer genetic syndromes including gastrointestinal, breast/ovarian, melanoma, and renal cell carcinoma, as well as, other rare cancer genetic conditions. Clinical time is devoted to the outpatient Cancer Risk and Prevention Clinic at Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute in Scarborough. The cancer genetics counselor collaborates with multidisciplinary specialists including the medical oncologist, clinical geneticist, and other oncology care team providers.
- Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
- Education: Master's degree from an accredited Genetics Counseling training program.
- License/Certifications: Candidates should be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
- Experience: Experience in cancer genetics counseling preferred.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a variety of personnel (e.g., patients, employees, physicians and other health care professionals.)
- Computer skills proficiency.
- Public speaking.
