    The University of Maryland, Baltimore has an exciting opportunity for a new team member to join the Office of Environmental Health and Safety as a Radiation Health Physics Technician.

    The selected candidate will accomplish assigned duties by applying specialized and theoretical knowledge, principles, and concepts of their professional discipline.

    They will also resolve issues and significant radiological matters by utilizing their independent judgment, discretion, creativity, and analytical thinking.

    Primary Duties


    • Assists Health Physicists, Laser Safety Officer, and Radiation Safety Officers. Routinely perform Health Physics tasks.
    • Providing health physics support for diagnostic and therapeutic administration of radiation in clinical radiation use areas.
    • Performs and documents radiation protection audits, surveys, and inspections of rooms, departments, areas, or facilities where radioactive materials and/or radiation-producing equipment are used.
    • Conducts inspections of radiation-protective equipment, including fixtures, devices, and personal protective equipment under supervision.
    • Reviews and interprets radiation protection audit/survey/inspection results and recommends corrective and preventative actions.
    • Maintains inventories of radiation detection instruments, sealed source radioactive materials, and radiation emitting devices.
    • Performs and documents receipt surveys of incoming radioactive material shipments.
    • Performs surveys and decontamination of radioactive material use areas.
    • Responds to radioactive material spills and other radiation emergencies.
    • Measures and documents radiation levels around patients receiving therapeutic treatments.
    • Performs appropriate surveys for clinical x-ray producing equipment, including x-ray irradiators, radiographic, or fluoroscopic equipment for human use.
    • Follows and enforces HIPAA regulations.
    • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    Education:
    Bachelor's degree in relevant field (preferably in health physics, medical physics, or physics). A Master's degree in a relevant field can count for two (2) years of experience.

    Experience:
    One (1) year of experience in radiation safety program administration or a clinical or research laboratory environment. Experience working with or around radioactive materials is preferred.

    Certification/Licensure:
    Radiation-Producing Machine Inspector certification (or certificate eligible) preferred. NRRPT certification a plus.

    Other:
    Offer of employment may be contingent on applicant obtaining medical clearance by university approved medical staff.

    Physical Requirements

    Light to moderate physical effort is generally required.

    Some activities will require traversing the campus for long periods; while others remain being in a stationary position for long periods (hours) of time while others require being able to remain sedentary for 50% of the time.

    Employee will be required to position themselves to lower levels, including crouching or kneeling to reach desired locations. Employee will occasionally ascend/descend ladders/stools. The employee must have ability to lift or carry up to 50 pounds. Must be able to handle, grip, and reach above or below shoulder. Must be able to push or pull mobile shielding systems or shielded carts up to 200 pounds.

    Employee will be required to wear PPE, including lead aprons that weigh up to 30 pounds, for extended periods of time while manipulating equipment.

    Special Conditions of Employment

    Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions.

    Position may, at times, require employee to work with hazardous materials or be in areas where radiation producing equipment, radioactive materials, chemicals or biological agents are present.

    Employee is required to wear personal protective equipment, including lead shielding, and a respirator in certain circumstances. This position will need to travel to off-campus UMB sites, including Shady Grove and IMET.

    The Hiring Range for this position is in the $60,000s, commensurate with education and experience.
