Position Summary/Purpose of Position:


  • The Public Health Science program is seeking a 12month, fulltime (20 hours per week) graduate assistant to begin work in summer 2024. Students possessing a passion for facilitating students' academic and professional development using datadriven and culturally competent approaches are encouraged to apply. This position builds communication, critical thinking, technology, problemsolving and leadership skills. It offers professional opportunities for direct experience in providing academic advising services to a diverse student population, through orientation, recruitment, program delivery support, program development, and more.


This assistantship is an excellent opportunity for students in any graduate program but will significantly benefit students in the fields of student development, student affairs, higher education, public health, psychology, social work, human services, education, and other careers of service.


Responsibilities will include:

Advising

  • Guiding current and prospective PHSC majors during virtual or inperson dropin hours and individual appointments
  • Advising and approving graduation plans for firstsemester transfer students during graduation planning dropins, senior audit, transfer mandatory advising workshops, and individual appointments
  • Serving as a representative of the PHSC program by attending various virtual or inperson student events such as freshmen and transfer orientations, admitted student open house, student engagement fairs, etc.
  • Maintain accurate student records by updating advising notes after student meetings (dropins and orientations).
Communication

  • Working with program staff on communication outreach to students, including but not limited to flyers, program information, events, newsletters, etc.
  • Managing and creating content for the PHSC social media accounts
Process

  • Preparing and processing of materials for change of major workshops, orientations, and transfer mandatory advising workshops
  • Checking prerequisites and restrictions for PHSC courses at multiple points in time
  • Providing support for virtual or inperson enrichment events for PHSC students, which include planning, event registration, and attendance
  • Providing administrative support for PHSC's independent study and internship programs
Data

  • Supporting the PHSC team in tracking student numbers and demographics and generating reports based on this information
General

  • Greeting visitors in the PHSC office suite
  • Attending weekly team meetings
  • Completing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:


Education:


  • Must be enrolled in a UMCP graduate program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Strong communication skills, written and oral.
  • Strong customer service and problemsolving skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently.

Preferences:


Preferences:


  • Graduate of the PHSC program, other public health program or student in a master's program in Student Development, Higher Education, or Counseling Education/Counseling Psychology.
  • Experience with data management and analysis.
  • Willingness to learn about PHSC major.
  • Enjoyment from engaging with undergraduate students and program staff and faculty.
