ROTATING SHIFT

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Validates patient identity and screens prescriptions for completeness, formulary/restriction and payment status, prior to processing.
  • Receives written or electronically transmitted prescriptions, types prescription labels and affixes labels on containers.
  • Accurately keys and retrieves prescription data from a computergenerated file for review by a pharmacist.
  • Obtains drugs from stock and returns them to stock and fills appropriate forms as applicable/required by the department.
  • Restocks automated dispensing cabinets.
  • Gets prescription files and other manual records from storage and locates prescriptions.
  • Counts dosage units of drugs and places unit doses in appropriate patient bin for dispensing.
  • Receiving in OPD, including reconciliation of the stock with invoice.
  • Confirmation/reconciliation of the received stock in electronic inventory system.
  • Obtaining medications from stock room personnel and restock area bins, ensuring rotating stock with earliest expiration date in the front.
  • Works in the IV room to assist the Pharmacist, including docking.
  • Prepares manual records of dispensing for the signature or initials of the pharmacist as necessary.
  • Handles or delivers completed prescriptions to the patient or the person authorized to act on behalf of the patient and advises of the availability of counseling to be conducted by the licensed pharmacist or pharmacy intern.
  • Licensed Pharmacy Technician assists the Pharmacist, as directed, in compounding ("compounding" means the combining, admixing, mixing, diluting, pooling, reconstituting, or otherwise altering of a drug or bulk drug substance to create a drug), preparing, labeling or dispensing of compounding drugs used to fill valid prescriptions or medication orders or in compounding, preparing, and labeling in anticipation of a valid prescription or medication order for a patient.
  • Performs pharmacyrelated clerical duties.
  • Delivers stat and other medications to the nursing unit including unit dose cart exchange.
  • Attends and/or participates in staff departmental and interdisciplinary meetings and training, as required.
  • Performs other related functions, as directed by the pharmacist/manager.

Minimum Qualifications:

Effective April 25, 2021, all new hires into the title of Pharmacy Technician must be licensed to practice as a
Registered Pharmacy Technician by the NYSED.
