Job Summary
Purdue University seeks an outstanding leader and veterinarian as its next Dean of Veterinary Medicine and Hospital CEO. Currently ranked 11th in U.S. News Best Veterinary Schools and with its new and , the primary goal of the next Dean will be to raise the quality and impact of Purdue's research and professional training in veterinary medicine to the top rank worldwide, all while deepening "One Health" partnerships across the state, regionally and globally. The Dean also oversees clinical staff services across Purdue's state-of-the-art facilities and field services, which bring a host of new capabilities to over 50,000 patients in the region.
Holding a leadership role of critical importance to Purdue at this juncture, the next Dean will see enormous opportunities to partner across the full spectrum of health and life sciences strengths on campus, from basic science to clinical and translational research. These areas span leading departments, centers, institutes, and programs in cancer research; inflammation, immunology, infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance, neuroscience, musculoskeletal research; chemistry and drug discovery; pharmacy; engineering; and computer science and artificial intelligence, among many others. The broad health and life sciences constitute an emerging strategic priority at Purdue alongside , Purdue's , and a reinvigorated These opportunities for stronger connections across disciplines will allow the successful candidate to build on existing strengths, and to support and develop new research engines and strong collaborative opportunities both across and beyond Purdue.
The next Dean will develop and implement strategies to address a key period of evolution and growth in face-to-face and online academic veterinary medicine and veterinary medical and nursing curricula, while continuing to support and expand development of the next generation of Day-One competent self-sufficient veterinarians, ready to lead in the State of Indiana, the United States, and the world. Doing so is a crucial and high-profile step toward Purdue's declared goal of becoming a top-five public land grant research university, and expectations and potential rewards for the next leader will be commensurately high.
Together the timing and scope of this role make it a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fundamentally transform and expand both the reach and the physical footprint of research and teaching in Purdue's thriving suite of Veterinary Medicine programs, making them truly and sustainably world leading. The next Dean will also lead efforts to enhance current clinical strengths and to develop new areas of strength and revenue, while supporting the recruitment, retention, development, and success of all faculty, residents, interns, staff and students within a strengthening academic veterinary medical center of excellence.
The next Dean will also leverage and build on substantial forward momentum in engagement, philanthropy, and development, in building external relationships and partnerships, and in growing financial resources to support the elevated profile of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue. The next Dean will also continue to be an enthusiastic advocate and proponent of veterinary Medicine within Purdue and externally with state and national government, organized veterinary medicine, a range of business and industry entities, clients, alumni, and local and regional referring veterinarians. The next Dean will be fiscally responsible, while balancing the investments and risk needed to achieve the stated goals, and will demonstrate agility, creativity, and innovation in navigating evolving opportunities and threats.
The successful candidate should have a record of research, teaching, industry, or government achievement sufficient to qualify for a tenured position at the rank of full professor, and will ideally possess:
• A proven track record of transformational, collaborative, and supportive leadership
• Demonstrated organizational and fiscal management and planning expertise
• A proven track record of relationship-building with external stakeholders and entities
• Demonstrated business acumen, sustainable revenue generation, and fundraising expertise
• A demonstrated ability to bring people together and successful team work
