    Peer Assisted Learning Leader- Work Study


    PURPOSE
    The Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) program targets difficult academic courses and provides regularly, scheduled, out-of-class, peer-facilitated study sessions.

    The PAL leader's role is to plan and facilitate study sessions which support learners studying the same subject.

    These facilitated sessions support students in clarifying and reviewing concepts taught in class, explain processes, and help students solve specific problems.

    The role of the PAL leader is not to re-teach subjects or provide specific assignment answers, but to provide an active learning space in which students can consolidate knowledge and to provide support and motivate students.


    Furthermore the PAL leader's role is also to work in partnership with the course instructors, PAL team, and the Lead Tutor Specialist to understand and maintain awareness of inclusivity and of challenges of Life University students.


    ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

    • The PAL leader will closely collaborate with the course instructors, PAL team professionals, and the Lead Tutor Specialist to provide subject-specific content to help students through drop-in assistance.
    • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students' diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences.
    • PAL leaders are expected to conduct at least one, 2-hour PAL session per week each quarter commitment.
    • PAL leaders are required to develop and lead weekly scheduled PAL sessions for their specific subject area(s).
    • Participate in professional development activities to improve tutorial skills and continue to grow cultural competence and reflection skills.
    • Leaders are required to meet at least once a month for a check-in with the Lead Tutor Specialist.
    • To attend the mandatory PAL leader training each quarter.
    • Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice from the Lead Tutor Specialist.
    • Recognizing the primary role is to help students become more confident, more successful, self directed learners.
    • Provide direct assistance in the use of equipment, learning objects, and materials needed for student success.
    • Make appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources as needed directly to the Lead Tutor Specialist.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    Education, Training and/or Experience


    • Successful completion of two quarters of study at Life University.
    • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.25 and maintain a 3.0 after hiring.
    • Must have made an "A" in the course which you are applying to serve as a leader for
    • Must have 2 recommendation letters with one being from the faculty member from the subject that you are applying to.
    • Be committed to participate in mandatory paid trainings to serve as a PAL leader.
    • Awareness and understanding of different learning preferences.
    • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
    • Positive, flexible, and empathetic approach to problem solving.
    • Reliable and punctual.
    • Must be eligible and/or awarded work-study funds.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.

    I recognize that due to the unique nature of the tasks and responsibilities of an SI/Tutor, my conduct must be above reproach and in accordance with the Mission of Life University and the Office of Student Services.

    Staff members have a responsibility to behave in ways that will not have a detrimental effect upon the University or any members of the University community.

    Furthermore, I recognize that my conduct should reflect the consciousness of my position as a positive role model for all the students.

    Finally, I recognize that because I am a member of a community, I will hold my fellow staff members to the same standards of as any other student.

    I further agree that my appointment to the position of SI/Tutor is dependant on my being in good conduct standing with Life University at the time of my hire, and may be terminated if I fail to abide by the above-mentioned conditions or if I violate University or Student Services policies as determined by the professional staff or outlined in the Student Handbook.
