    Position Description

    Advertised Job Summary


    The Research Associate/Health Care Data Analyst provides high-level professional healthcare claims analytics work related to Medicaid and conducts quantitative analyses supporting health care projects and research activities; extensively utilizes database technologies to acquire and transform the data into consistent data formats to power dashboards and reports.

    Gathers, analyzes and compiles healthcare and provider data to develop and evaluate healthcare programs and policies.

    Works as a part of our expert interdisciplinary team that includes researchers, policy analysts, biostatisticians, data scientists, and data visualization specialists who conduct research, evaluation, and policy analysis to support health care and delivery system reform, as well as health services, evaluation, maternal and child health, big data analytics, data visualization, and health policy initiatives.

    The Institute is devoted to transforming health systems through actionable cross-disciplinary and collaborative research. Position is located in Columbia, SC and is not a remote position.

    Required Education and Experience


    Master's Degree in public health, biostatistics, health informatics, environmental science, epidemiology, and 3 years of relevant experience; equivalent combination of degree with experience may be considered in place of a master's degree.

    Preferred Qualifications


    • Experience/training in health services research
    • At least 4 years of experience with analysis of claims/encounter data
    • Demonstrated experience in data management and analysis with administrative data, such as health and/or behavior healthcare claims like Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance data or state agency or national datasets
    • Strong proficiency in SAS and SQL or other statistical analytical software programs (e.g., R, Python, Stata)
    • Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail
    • Experience with large relational database administration
    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities


    • Demonstrated ability to use analytical and visualization tools such as Excel (including advanced data manipulation techniques) and Power BI.
    • Interest in public health or issues relevant to health services research and health program/policy evaluation
    • Ability to plan for and work on multiple projects concurrently
    • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions and maintain thorough documentation of the decision-making process
    • Exemplary communication skills and ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, complicated processes to diverse audiences
    • Strong commitment to rigorous research methods, objectivity and accuracy of findings, and reproducibility of results.

    Works independently under the direction of the Principal Investigators to design, manage, implement, and interpret statistical analyses focused on healthcare expenditures, utilization and quality.

    Manages large databases of health insurance claims from Medicaid, Medicare and all-payer data warehouses, other state administrative datasets, as well as Electronic Health Records (EHR) data.

    Ensures accuracy and timeliness of reports to include regularly scheduled and ad-hoc reporting requests. Responsible for all follow-up and/or research requests regarding clinical data.
