    Summary

    As a staff member within Student Life, the Health and Wellbeing Specialist is responsible for setting the direction and advocating for the development of co-curricular programs and services that support student learning within fraternities and sororities. This position will work closely with the Associate Director.

    Primary areas of focus include:

  • Administrative responsibility for areas of specialization within Fraternity & Sorority Life, including sexual misconduct prevention, bystander intervention, supporting alcohol and other drug abuse prevention, mental health, and other well-being initiatives
  • Program development and implementation
  • Student organization advising, consultation, and oversight (councils and fraternity/sorority chapters)
  • Assist in assessment and evaluation in alignment with office and divisional assessment priorities
  • This is a 3-year, term-limited position.

    Responsibilities*

    Program Development (55%)

  • Lead FSL Health and Wellbeing program for all four councils, expanding on existing prevention practices designed to raise awareness of risks associated with AOD, hazing, sexual misconduct, and mental health
  • Develop and implement health and well-being educational workshops and learning experiences for fraternity and sorority members of all four councils. Maintain close relationships with key university departments and internal/external stakeholders in order to continuously assess and advance program content
  • Develop new educational programming around values-based recruitment; support student leaders to assess and strengthen existing peer-led programming
  • Work in partnership with the Assistant Director of Organizational Conduct to provide intervention when student behavior is potentially harmful to others, the community, and/or is self-destructive. Develop a course of action and education that will improve safety, reduce harm, and minimize critical incidents and risk
  • Student Organization Advising (25%)

  • Provide education, direction, management, and leadership development opportunities to individual students and fraternities and sororities across all four councils to enhance student organization effectiveness across all 8 dimensions of wellness. Areas to address include academic performance, physical and psychological health/wellness, risk management, career aspirations, interpersonal conflict, social identity and justice, and personal and leadership development
  • Coach, consult with, and provide direction for the chapters and general membership of various councils
  • Assist staff and student leaders in the creation and facilitation of activities designed to create a cohesive fraternity/sorority community and be able to serve as a resource for their communities at large
  • Provide conflict resolution for individual students and between student organizations
  • Together with other unit staff, advise F/S related committees and honor societies
  • Provide resources and education to chapter alumni advisors, housing boards, house directors, and other volunteers/staff members to assist their support of collegiate chapters, officers, and housing
  • Administrative (15%)

  • Serve as a strategic partner to other Student Life Units such as serving as a wellness coach with Wolverine Wellness, participating in programs offered by the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC), and other units that promote wellness of students
  • Lead and participate in University-wide committees including establishing liaison relationships with other departments, participating in roundtable discussions, and attending periodic meetings with student services offices across campus
  • Assist in the preparation and tracking of programming budget, providing documentation of evidence supporting requests for additional University funds
  • Participate in strategic planning efforts including implementation of FSL Strategic Plan, implementation of the Achievement Expectations Program, and development of annual unit goals
  • Work in partnership with the associate director and other FSL staff members to develop and implement assessment methods for programming and initiatives
  • Supervision (5%)

  • Will supervise up to one Student Services Assistant I (Graduate Intern) if funding permits
  • Provides supervision and/or shared oversight for FSL student employees, council officers, chapter presidents, and executive board members when needed
  • Position Criteria (Candidate Characteristics):

  • Ability to work independently and multitask
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Access, Word, Excel, and Google
  • Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Full-time, part-time, graduate, or volunteer experience working to promote health and well-being
  • Experience in higher education, program administration, or student affairs
  • Desired Qualifications*

  • Education: Master's Degree
  • Professional Certification: membership in a fraternity/sorority organization
  • Knowledge of and experience with the application of student and leadership development theories within Greek-letter organizations; strong administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Specialized Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate knowledge in the following areas: promotion of physical and psychological health/wellness, sexual misconduct prevention and response, prevention of high-risk use of alcohol and other drugs, diversity and inclusion, leadership development, and hazing prevention within fraternal organizations
