    Job Description Summary


    This individual will act as manager for technical staff and oversee the day-to-day function of the newly consolidated Clinical Infectious Disease Laboratory at PennVet's Ryan Small Animal Hospital.

    They will work with faculty in the Section to implement new tests and to maintain a high level of quality service and results.

    Experience in a veterinary diagnostic microbiology laboratory is essential to this role and extensive knowledge of veterinary infectious diseases is required.


    The Clinical Infectious Disease Laboratory Manager will oversee day-to day function of the laboratory by assigning tasks and monitoring workflows and schedules of employees.

    They will also be an integral part of the technical team and provide diagnostic services and reporting of results according to laboratory standards and guidelines across bacteriology, parasitology and molecular services.

    They will be primary person responsible for the training of new employees and student workers, ensuring maintenance of equipment to manufacturers' instructions and performing inventory of lab and ordering of supplies.

    They will meet with laboratory faculty regularly to implement vision for laboratory as new tests and services are on boarded and to advocate for needs of the laboratory and its staff.

    Job Responsibilities


    • Oversees day-to day function of the laboratory (team of 5-6) by assigning tasks and monitoring workflows and contributes to completing diagnostic work as needed.
    • Recruitment, selecting and training of new staff and student workers. Monitoring employee productivity and work quality by providing useful feedback and training and identifying workplace problems and helping to resolve them.
    • Serves as first line of communication with laboratory clients and triages concerns to laboratory faculty as needed. Maintains strong relationship with clients and resolves technical and billing issues as they arise.
    • Maintains multiple laboratory information systems and interfaces of all equipment and troubleshoots non-functioning equipment.
    • Maintains laboratory supplies inventory and performs ordering as needed .
    • Meet with Laboratory faculty regularly to implement vision for laboratory as new tests and services are on boarded.
    • Schedules work hours and shifts on Clinical Infectious Disease Lab Team.
    • Maintains professional skills and knowledge .
    • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
    Qualifications


    • Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
    • Previous experience and technical proficiency in veterinary clinical microbiology laboratory methods is required .
    • Previous managerial or supervisor experience preferred.
