Qualifications:


  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Four years of experience in building construction trades, building maintenance, or in the operation, maintenance and/or repair of water vessels, movable bridges, or other equipment such as heavy, mobile, mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

  • Training in building construction trades, building maintenance, or in the operation, maintenance and/or repair of water vessels, movable bridges, or other equipment such as heavy, mobile, mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience on a month for month basis.

NOTE:

  • Custodial building maintenance is not qualifying.


Examples of building construction trades include cabinetmaker, carpenter, concrete finisher, electrician, HVAC controls technician, HVAC mechanic, ironworker, millwright, painter, pipe-fitter, plasterer, plumber, refrigeration mechanic, roofer, sheet metal worker, steamfitter, tile setter and welder.

Examples of building maintenance include Maintenance Repairer 1/2, B/G/E Maintenance Repairer 1/2 and Maintenance Repair Foreman.


Examples of repair/maintenance of mechanical equipment include Operating Engineer 1/2, auto mechanic, Mobile Equipment Maintenance Mechanic, Mobile Equipment Overhaul Mechanic and Mobile Equipment Master Mechanic.


Job Concepts:


  • FUNCTION OF WORK:
  • To supervise a crew of Port Facility Maintenance Specialists and Helpers in the maintenance and repair of the port's buildings, equipment, docks, transit sheds, and railroads.

LEVEL OF WORK:

  • Supervisor.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

  • Direct from the Port Facility Maintenance Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

  • Direct over lower level Maintenance personnel.

LOCATION OF WORK:

  • May be used by all Port Authorities.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

  • Differs from the Port Facility Maintenance Specialist 3 by the presence of full supervisory responsibilities over lower level port maintenance staff.
Differs from the Port Facility Maintenance Manager by the absence of directing the maintenance operations of the Port facility.


Examples of Work:

Assists and supervises repairs requiring the skills of plumber, welder, electrician, carpenter, mobile equipment operators, maintenance specialists, or helpers.


Inspects buildings, grounds, docks, transit sheds, railroads, and equipment to determine need for various types of repairs or maintenance work.

Inspects work in progress and upon completion for compliance with standards.

Makes assignments to subordinates or crews providing a variety of maintenance construction or repairs.

Operates equipment required to maintain the facility.

Maintains the purification process for the water supply.

Prepares time, work and maintenance reports.

Assists in general upkeep of grounds.
