    Description

    ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
    1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.

    2. BSN required; MSN preferred.

    3. Minimum of 5 years experience in an acute care setting.

    4. Demonstrates administrative and supervisory ability.

    5. Demonstrates ability to lead/direct others and to work effectively with persons of varied background and educational experience.

    6.

    Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills consistent with Relationship Based Care (RBC), Commitment to Co-worker, Munson Medical Center's Mission and Values.

    7. Comprehensive knowledge of general nursing theory and practice including the nursing process.

    8. Additional education in management principles and teaching is preferred.


    ORGANIZATION
    1.

    Under direct and general supervision of the Admission Manager, may also receive direction from the Vice President Patient Care Services, and any/all Directors and Managers of Patient Care Services.

    2. Works collaboratively with all nursing and non-nursing managers throughout the organization.

    3. Functions within approved nursing, medical, and hospital standards and policies.

    4. Provides general direction, supervision, and consultation for the work and activities of the Staff on assigned shift of operation.


    STANDARDS OF PRACTICE
    1. Assessment


    • Records and evaluates staffing patterns for all inpatient nursing units each shift.
    • Observes the general shift operations for the presence of or potential for problem situations in the physical and emotional environment.
    2. Diagnosis/Problem Identification


    • Facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration in data analysis and decision making processes.
    3. Identification of Outcomes


    • Directs, maintains, and evaluates processes that promote Relationship Based Care and desired patientcentered outcomes that are culturally sensitive and inclusive of patient/family needs according to accepted standards of clinical nursing practice.
    • Assists in the utilization of the PCSS database to ensure appropriate staffing ratios.
    • Promotes the integration of clinical, human resource, and financial data to support decisionmaking.
    4. Planning


    • Supports organizational and Unit Action Council plans related to the delivery of unit based nursing services and patient care.
    • Develops and implements goals and objectives annually in concert with the Administrative goals. Reviews and reports on progress quarterly and revises as necessary.
    • Evaluates need for immediate intervention in family crisis situations and Medical Social Work involvement when available.
    5. Implementation


    • Facilitates staff participation in decisionmaking as it relates to the specification of resources necessary for implementation of patient care.
    • Assures the proper disposition of the deceased; notifies the Medical Examiner per protocol.
    • Assists in scheduling surgical cases and outpatient medical procedure cases.
    • Assists Admitting Representatives with the placement and/or transfer of patients.
    • Assists Environmental Services in arranging the cleaning of late discharged patient's rooms.
    • Facilitates the process for Work Injuries, For Cause Drug testing and Exposures.
    6. Evaluation


    • Evaluates the general shift operations for the presence of or potential for problem situation in the physical and emotional environment.

    STANDARDS OF PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE
    1. Quality of Care and Administrative Practice


    • Embraces and supports Relationship Based Care and the performance improvement philosophy of Munson Medical Center.
    • Provides leadership in establishing a culture of safety. Recognizes and reports any occurrences which might result in liability of the hospital.
    • Supports a shared governance philosophy throughout nursing.
    • Demonstrates initiative and judgment in adapting or devising solutions to meet emergency or unusual conditions.
    • Identifies, investigates, and intervenes as appropriate when problem situations or complaints arise.
    • Consults the Oncall Administrator as necessary and communicates pertinent information to the Admission Manager and/or the appropriate manager and/or Director.
    • Provides leadership and direction with the interpretation, application, and enforcement of operating policies and procedures and professional standards.
    • Acts as a professional role model and consultant in health care issues.
    • Promotes staff development of clinical, problemsolving, and decisionmaking skills.
    • Accountable for utilizing resources appropriately, maintaining the integrity of each unit's budget.
    • Demonstrates proficiency with systems used to determine staffing efficiencies.
    2. Performance Appraisal


    • Evaluates own performance based on professional practice standards, relevant statutes and regulations, and organizational criteria.
    • Identifies areas of strength as well as areas for professional/practice development.
    • Available to assist managers in the evaluation of staff performance.
    • Is knowledgeable about and ensures fair and consistent application of personnel policies.
    3. Education


    • Assesses and maintains position competencies through a combination of self directed learning activities that include but are not limited to continuing education, participation in professional organizations, teaching, and mentoring activities.
    • Seeks additional knowledge and skills appropriate to the practice setting by developing and/or participating in educational programs and activities, conferences, workshops, and selfdirected learning.
    4. Professional Environment


    • Assist in development and/or implementation of performance improvement programs and services.
    • Assists managers and staff in interpreting/understanding hospital programs.
    • Develops and implements goals and objectives annually in concert with the Administrative goals. Reviews and reports on progress quarterly and revises as necessary.
    • Maintains own professional growth, demonstrates awareness of new trends in nursing practice, analyzes those trends for applicability to the position, shares new information with appropriate others, participates in appropriate educational offerings.
    • Serves on departmental and interdepartmental committees as requested.
    • Acknowledges that safety is a selfresponsibility. Knows the physical requirements of the job and works within those guidelines. Performs job duties safely at all times, utilizing learned body mechanics and transferring/lifting techniques. Plans actions to promote safety. Reports any unsafe situation/equipment according to Hospital procedure.

    • Utilizes the Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide practice.
    • Advocates on behalf of recipients of services and personnel.
    • Fosters a nondiscriminatory climate in which care is delivered in a manner sensitive to sociocultural diversity.
    • Supports the system to address ethical issues within nursing.
    6. Collaboration


    • Collaborates with nursing staff at all levels, interdisciplinary teams, and other stakeholders.
    • Participates with clinical leaders in the organization's decisionmaking structures and processes.
    • Collaborates with providers of nursing/patient care within the delivery system for provision of seamless delivery of services.
    • Is consistent, diplomatic, and assertive when dealing with personnel, medical staff, clients, and visitors.
    • Works cooperatively with law enforcement agencies.
    • Assumes responsibility for various hospital keys.
    • Able to develop and maintain good working relationships with personnel and promote open communication, staff development, collegiality, and inter/intradepartmental cohesiveness.
    7. Research


    • Participates and facilitates the identification of suitable nursing research topics.
    • Supports procedures for review of proposed research studies, including protection of the rights of human subjects.
    8. Resource Utilization


    • Facilitates interhospital transfers following the One-Call and Inter-Facility Transfer Communication Process flows.
    • Assigns staff according to acuity and census needs of the inpatientnursing units each shift.
    • Acts as the liaison between nursing personnel; between nursing and other employees, physicians, visitors, and patients.
    • Activates Disaster Plan in conjunction with the Administrator oncall; is responsible for coordinating the plan from activation to all clear unless/until relieved.
    • Provides an immediate response to all emergency situations.
    • Calls in oncall personnel after hours when necessary.
    • Communicates with TV/radio/the press to relate conditions of accident victims.
    • Assures the notification of GiftofLife on all hospital deaths.
    • Assists Charge Nurses and Unit Managers with staffing issues.
    • Tabulates census and probable discharges of patients for bed availability.
