The Department of Art & Art History in the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor of Photography for a renewable one-year appointment beginning in August 16, 2024.
The position is contingent on funding, performance and departmental needs. This is a full-time position with benefits; salary commensurate with experience. The teaching load is a 3-3. Courses include undergraduate photography studio courses across all levels, i.e., introductory, intermediate, and advanced.The position is also responsible for photography area oversight:
darkroom and digital photography lab management, ordering consumables and maintaining budget, supervision of photography area student worker, and related equipment maintenance.
Additional courses may include BA Capstone and/or BFA Critique Seminar (1-credit hour courses) as needed; and, depending on expertise and experience, Introduction to Digital Art, Drawing I, and Core Fine Arts.
Departmental service is expected.Minimum Qualifications
The position is open to candidates with an MFA in photography or a related field at the time employment begins, August 2024.
Strong candidates will have proven ability to teach all levels of photography, both wet-process B+W silver and digital processes, basic studio lighting, medium and large format cameras, color managed printing work flows.
Ability to manage area is expected. Expertise in the theory and practice of contemporary photography, and a commitment to undergraduate education is also expected.Outstanding candidates will have an active exhibition record demonstrating a sustained creative research practice, evidence of effective teaching as an instructor of record at the college level, and strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
Desired QualificationsAbility to teach Introduction to Digital Art, Drawing I, or Core Fine Arts (ARTS 1510: Looking at Art) as needed.
Strong desire for candidates with significant experience teaching at the college/university level. Experience working with Canvas. Experience with maintaining darkroom and digital photo lab spaces.Additional Information:
The Department of Art & Art History currently offers two degrees in studio art (B.A. and B.F.A), a B.A.
degree in Art with a formal option in Art History, and minors in animation, art history, photography, and studio art.
The Department is a charter member of NASAD and is the oldest fully-accredited art department in the Southeast. It is housed in historic Biggin Hall with north-light studio classrooms and a 3-D Arts Building. The department includes an 800 sq. ft. exhibitions gallery.Students and faculty regularly visit and collaborate with the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, which contains an impressive permanent collection of European and American fine and decorative arts, and hosts a roster of first-rate exhibitions, lectures, films, and special events.
