Qualifying experience:
One year of full-time engineering experience in the design and construction of parks, roads, bridges, recreational facilities, water and/or wastewater treatment facilities.Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S.
If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States or its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency.

1 Transfer Qualifications:
Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Consultant in Physical Standards & Safety, Facilities Planner 1, or an Assistant Engineer with one of the following parenthetical title designations: Civil/Transportation, Environmental, Mechanical, Mechanical/HVAC, Electrical, Civil, Civil/Construction, Civil/Geotechnical, Civil/Structural, Chemical, or Fire Protection.
Assistant Engineer Gas Pipeline Safety is also approved under Section 70.1, however special qualifications are needed.Duties Description As an Assistant Engineer, your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
provide engineering services including consultation, evaluation, planning, systems design, engineering surveys, or project oversight in order to ensure work conforms to accepted engineering standards.
You may supervise and evaluate the work of technicians in projects within your engineering specialty.Examples include, but are not limited to, the construction, extension, alteration, remodeling, and maintenance of roads, buildings, public and private water and sewer systems, public health regulation and monitoring of water systems, electrical and power supply systems, fire protection systems, and large structures including major roads, environmental remediation systems, and bridges.

*For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination.
Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.
While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
