- Assist with the reviews of construction documents (drawings, specifications, and other supporting documentation) for conformance with applicable codes, rules, regulations, and standards;
- Assist with the review of changes submitted for previously approved projects for conformance with applicable codes, rules, regulations, and standards;
- Provide technical assistance to school districts, architects, and engineers working on public school projects;
- Assist with responding to correspondence from a wide range of individuals, including parents, citizens, school administrators, consultants, and legislators;
- Perform research, as necessary, to resolve code related issues;
- Make field visits and inspections, as required, to investigate code compliance, complaints, or emergency conditions;
- Assist with review of public-school building energy consumption and operations in compliance with NYS Energy Code and provide direction to improve energy performance; and
- Perform special projects as assigned.

At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments.In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination.
Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.
While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

This Office is primarily responsible for code enforcement, life safety, and health safety in all public K-12 schools and BOCES in the State, exclusive of New York City.
Under the supervision of a higher-level engineer, the incumbent of this position will perform engineering work to support review and approval of engineering construction documents for capital construction undertaken by public school districts and BOCES that require the approval of the Commissioner of Education.
Duties of these positions include, but are not limited to, the following:Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a contingent permanent, competitive appointment or a contingent permanent non-competitive appointment. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments.
