    Make a Difference in Oregon's Natural Resources

    Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

    The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) has an immediate opening for a full-time permanent Natural Resource Specialist 1 (Habitat Biologist) position located in Charleston, Oregon.

    About the position:

    In coordination with District biologists, this position will manage day to day operations at the Umpqua Watershed District's Coquille Valley Wildlife Area in Coos County. This includes administration CVWA's public use program, coordination with the local drainage districts for water distribution on CVWA, grant writing and administration, monitoring, maintenance, restoration, and public education. Coordinate with district staff and external partners to improve wildlife habitat on at least three additional ODFW properties in the western portion of the Umpqua watershed district. Projects may include controlling noxious weeds, providing native and non-native food crops, resting and breeding areas for migrating and wintering waterfowl and other associated species as well as maintenance of signage and infrastructure related to public use, collection of biological information on wildlife and waterfowl populations and physical data on the quality and quantity of species and their local habitats.

    Duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Initiate and participate in Coquille Valley Wildlife Area (CVWA) habitat restoration activities; Work independently or through coordination of contractors and partners to enhance and maintain habitat on CVWA.
    • Initiate and participate in wildlife habitat improvement projects on other ODFW lands or lands managed or owned by other entities such as USFS, BLM DSL and private landowners. Work with district staff to provide recommendations related to habitat restoration.
    • Occasionally use both motorboats, heavy equipment, including flat-bed or dump trucks and ATV's in completion of duties.
    • Write routine or draft more complex grant applications and administer grants related to wildlife habitat improvement work. Work with both Fish and Wildlife District Biologists to ensure grant applications and administration meet operation needs at the CVWA.
    • Write monthly and annual reports summarizing restoration efforts and results. Make initial recommendations regarding changes to restoration efforts.
    • Inspect and repair CVWA facilities, parking lots, fences, signage and other improvements for condition and need for repair, replacement and/or upgrade.
    • Invasive plant control. Public Pesticide Applicator's license will be required.
    • Inventory, maintain equipment. Replace or repair as necessary.
    • Operate heavy equipment such as tractors, dozers and trucks.
    • Assist District biologists in more complex grant writing and grant administration related to maintenance needs

    Working Conditions

    • Job requires employee to travel by air, foot or vehicle through isolated, rugged terrain. Typical work includes exposure to all types of inclement weather. Driving under inclement road conditions and handling of wild animals are required. Public contacts sometimes include confused or contentious individuals.
    • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.
    • This position requires occasional use of a firearm to deliver immobilization drugs and projecting nets for wildlife capture, euthanizing injured or sick wildlife, killing or hazing nuisance animals and birds, collecting animals for research or other studies, and protection from dangerous animals in close quarters. The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal history background check to verify they may legally possess a firearm before being hired into this position. Training must be taken prior to using or transporting a firearm.
    • This position requires a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record.
    • This position requires an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on-the-job use of quads and three-wheeled ATVs (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.
    • This position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board.
    • This position requires the possession of a Public Pesticide Applicator License (PPAL).

Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible.
