Duties:


  • Serve as a specialist on the SOHES team and participates in the overall management of safety, occupational health, biosafety/security, and radiation safety related to crop and animal agricultural research.
  • Develop with research and support services staff to safety, health and environmental programs that are consistent with ARS guidelines and Federal, State, and local laws and regulations.
  • Prepare and provide ARS Safety, Health and Environmental Management Programrelated plans, cost estimates, reports, statistics, and/or other information for assigned section of The Center.
  • Manage the maintenance of records and preparation of reports on workrelated injuries, illnesses, motor vehicle accidents and other property damage.
  • Monitors funding and disbursement; and justifies additional costs.
  • Provide written advice and recommendations on safety, occupational health, and hazardous materials to research and support staff.

Conditions of Employment:


  • You must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of oneyear probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Direct Deposit: Per Public Law all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.
  • Motor vehicle Driver's License is required.
  • Special Physical Requirement/ Demands.
  • Must obtain and maintain Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) Certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Safety Equipment must be used when required.

Specialized Experience:

Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised.

The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

For this position, specialized experience is experience implementing safety, health, or environmental management programs in a research environment; using management systems for the management of safety programs; and advising support staff on safety and occupational health regulations, policies, or standards.

Physical Demands:

Because of diverse research operations, the work requires above average agility, dexterity, and personal strength.

The work may involve moderately strenuous physical exertion such as standing for long periods of time, bending and stooping to observe and study work operations in an industrial, storage, laboratory or comparable work area.

Often there are high physical risks and discomforts. Some travel is required.

Work Environment:


Some of the work is performed in an office setting and some of the work is in the field, which involves exposure to hazards, moving equipment, heights, closed spaces, high noise, adverse weather, crop and animal facilities, and temperature extremes.

These environments may present hazards that require special safety precautions and protective clothing

  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education:

This position does not have an education qualification requirement.
