    POSITION SUMMARY

    The role of the Academic Tutor is to support students' academic and social and emotional learning and achievement. The ideal candidate should possess excellent instructional skills to provide academic support to students while also connecting them to essential support services for social-emotional learning (SEL) and guidance. Ongoing support and intervention are provided via a multi-tiered system of support model and include services that strengthen home, school, and community partnerships and addresses barriers to learning and achievement.

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field required; master's degree preferred.
  • Massachusetts teaching license required; ELA certification preferred.
  • Familiarity with Massachusetts curriculum standards.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and sensitivity; proven experience in teaching students from diverse backgrounds at various levels preferred.
  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively with people from diverse ethnic and linguistic educational backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in oral and written English; Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to effectively manage a caseload of students.
  • Demonstrated leadership, time-management, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of social-emotional learning and ability to connect students to appropriate support services.
  • Basic knowledge of common practices, processes, policies, community resources, and counseling/social work with high-risk children and adolescent populations.
  • Working knowledge of computers and other technology (eg. Zoom) to support student learning; proficiency in Microsoft and/or Google platforms required.
  • Reliable vehicle and a valid MA state driver's license required.

    SKILLS AND RESPONSBILITIES

    Under the Innovation and Grants Management Department, the Academic Tutor assumes a broad range of responsibilities:

  • Maintains a caseload of students requiring academic and social-emotional support, including those who may need home or hospital visits.
  • Coordinates all tutoring services; tracks and monitors student progress, adjusting tutoring strategies as needed to meet individual student needs.
  • Conducts one-on-one and small group tutoring and support sessions, virtually and in person, including without limitation at homes, schools, medical facilities, and other applicable locations to address targeted academic goals.
  • Instructs students on the development of strategies like organization, note-taking, prioritizing, and studying.
  • Communicates with principals, guidance departments, social workers, classroom teachers, other school personnel, caretakers, and families regarding student progress in a timely manner.
  • Creates and maintains an up-to-date schedule of one-to-one tutoring sessions and organized study groups.
  • Performs all other duties as may be assigned by school and district leadership.
  • TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • As negotiated with Lynn School Committee and Lynn Teachers Union.
